Instrumental Music afternoon – Congratulations to Marina Thacker and Colin McIntyre for the fantastic Instrumental Gala Event on Sunday 18 November. The quality of the student performances was outstanding. It is pleasing to see our audience for the event is growing steadily each year. Congratulations to all the performers: Junior and Senior bands, New Farm Beats, Senior Choir and our Shine Winner Trslr.
Congratulations to our soloists in the choir: Camille, Greta and Sila who led the choir beautifully. Mr McIntyre also acknowledged the senior students leaving New Farm at the end of this year and wished them well in their music for secondary school. Special mention was made for our Year 6 soloist Dakota who has had numerous scholarship offers from a range of prestigious secondary schools. Lottie’s xylophone solo was a highlight of the band’s performance and her achievements in music have been noteworthy. Mia was commended for achievement in the honours selection in the metro schools this year. Special thanks also to Sunday Ali who accompanied the Choir and Djembe and James Byrne who accompanied on Base Guitar. Their contribution made the performances all the richer.
Christmas Dance Concert
A reminder to ensure you purchase your family tickets for the Dance Concert. It is sure to be a wonderful night of dance performances.
Reporting Period
Students are in the midst of finalising assessments which will inform their overall Semester 2 results. Teachers have been involved in moderation of assessment tasks over the past fortnight and will be completing report cards which will be sent home in the final week of school.
Thank you for the warm welcome at New Farm State School last week. It was fantastic to see so many parents attend the meeting before school and discuss the exciting opportunities that will be available for students attending Inner City North State Secondary College. I also had the opportunity to speak to the school students, staff and parents on Assembly and spend some time with Year 4 and 5 students gathering their ideas about the school. What an impressive group of students! So many good ideas. It was clear that some of them have been thinking about how they can contribute to the culture of the school already. I’m looking forward to getting to know and working with the New Farm SS community in the lead up to the first day of the new school on Tuesday 28th January, 2020.
At this stage, the best way to contact me is via email. Feel free to email with any questions or concerns or to make an appointment if you’d like to come in to see me at my office on site (585 St Paul’s Terrace). My email address is Sharon.Barker@qed.qld.gov.au
There are many external agencies available to schools and families that provide advice, resources and professional development in regards to catering for our students and children with additional needs. At New Farm, we access these supports regularly. Below is a summary of the Autism Hub.
For further information, visit https://ahrc.eq.edu.au/ .
The Autism Hub provides evidence-based information, support and advice to assist schools to actively include, retain and engage students with autism.
They have established strong partnerships with a range of key stakeholders to ensure innovative and cohesive delivery of services for students with autism and their families across Queensland, including Autism Queensland.
These strong connections enable them to support students, their families and educators to navigate and access the wide range of dedicated autism support services and programs offered by the Queensland Government and non-government agencies.
They provide information and deliver professional learning that supports educators to include, retain and engage students with autism and empower parents to partner with schools in their child's education.
Mrs Fletcher - 4F
Today we interviewed Mrs Hyams (as Mrs Fletcher sadly wasn’t here at the time) and class 4F, this is what they came up with.
How many students do you have in your class?
“22 students”
What interesting things have been happening in your class recently?
“Swimming, playing handball, Chinese, music and dance lessons”
What new discoveries have the students found?
“Finding out that everybody has different strengths and weaknesses”
Are you ready for next year?
“Yes, (majority of the class)”
After that we interviewed Mrs Hymes, but even though Mrs Hymes is a substitute teacher she said 4F is very well mannered and they have a very high level standards.
We asked her if:
If she had the chance to work fulltime for this class, would she take that opportunity?
“Without hesitation I would take that amazing opportunity if I had a chance and I don’t say that often.
Do you think this class works well as a team?
“They are very supportive of each other”
Do you think they are ready for grade 5?
“Yes they are absolutely ready for grade 5”

Year 2 celebrated Diwali in Week 5. On Thursday, they listened to the story of Diwali. Ananya, Blossom and Lakshay wore traditional Indian clothes and they acted out the story.
All Year 2s joined in activities like drawing and painting Rangoli patterns, constructing paper lanterns and elephants, and puzzles. Some 2G mums, Manisha Arora, Seema Masih and Jyothsna Upperpalli drew Rangoli patterns on hands using felt pens.
On Friday, Manisha created a colourful “Happy Diwali” sign under A Block using traditional Rangoli salts.
Comments from students:
Francis: It was fun getting my hand painted.
Emma: Me too!! Nicholas: Me too!!
Emma H: I loved the Rangoli painting in the sand, the colours were beautiful!
Lexie: My favourite part was the acting!
Matthew: I loved the play too!
Obi and Elonna: The hand painting was fun and the Happy Diwali sign was fantastic!
