Year 6 Leadership
Badge Ceremony
Yesterday Year 6 students were inducted into their leadership positions. Special guests, parents and fellow students watched as our students accepted their badges and made their leadership pledge to the school. I congratulate all students and wish them well for the year as they begin their leadership journey. Leadership roles include:
National Day of Action - Year 5 & 6 Permissions
This week we have send home 2 specific media consent forms for Year 5 & 6 students requested for activities on the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence on the 19th March. Please complete these and send them back as soon as possible.
On Friday (19 March), the Education Department will stand with students across Queensland and Australia for the 11th National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA). Almost all Queensland state schools will be taking part and empowering students to find solutions to help prevent bullying. New Farm are once again participating and we are very exciting to be part of this year’s day of action and celebration.
Thank you to our Well-Being Committee led by Guidance Office Jo Minto and supported by Head Of Department Mel Norman for working with the NDA Education Queensland team in coordinating the whole school assembly Friday 19th March following with workshops for senior students.
Harmony Week (15–21 March) gives us the chance to celebrate our cultural diversity. Celebrating difference and leveraging the diverse knowledge, skills and experience of our community enables us to develop a rich cultural context at New Farm SS. As part of our special assembly this Friday we are holding a Flag procession celebrating the 70 different nationalities represented in our school. We are so fortunate to be able to recognise and represent the vast diversity within our student community. Students are asked to wear clothing of their national background or Orange which is the colour selected for Harmony Day. The colour Orange represents social communication and is associated with joy, warmth, creativity and success.
Through the NDA students will revise our school’s Code of Conduct, PBL and ‘Bullying NO Way!’ anti-bullying strategies.
Workplace Health and Safety
This week we held our term LOCKDOWN drill practice. Thank you to classroom teachers and students for doing such a great job following procedures so efficiently.

Year 6 Camp – Moreton Island
I had the pleasure of accompanying our year 6 students, last week, to Moreton Island for N.F.S.S’s first Wilderness Camp. Our students were an absolute credit to their parents, teachers and school.
The camp took many out of their comfort zones with activities such as sand tobogganing, hiking, 4x wheel driving, cold showers, compost toilets and even washing up!
Our year 6 students returned to school, on Friday, with many memories and a lot of sand! Special thanks go to Mr Lawrence, Ms Zayn Al-Abidin, Ms Baker and Ms Hyams for giving up their family time and sleep to ensure this camp was such a huge success.

Our school is implementing the School Improvement Hierarchy Domain 7 ‘Differentiated Teaching and Learning’ with 83% fidelity. That’s a great achievement. As an Autism Friendly School, our staff implement ‘universal’ strategies in classrooms and across the school that are beneficial for all students. These include, but are not limited to-
- Visual schedules
- Pre-empting changes in routines
- What to Do stories
- Explicit teaching of routines and expectations
- High rates of acknowledgement using the PBL Kookie Rules
- Correction of students using the PBL response flow chart and Kookie Rules
- Social skills explicit and incidental lessons
- Active Supervision
- Differentiating curriculum
- Providing choice and multiple ways to respond
Our Inclusion Pillar Committee will be organising a parent feedback forum for parents of students with disabilities, learning difficulties, English as an Alternative Language or Dialect, medical conditions, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander backgrounds, and Gifts and Talents. This will be a small group of parents providing feedback on specifics of a recent survey sent to parents of students receiving substantial or extensive adjustments. I will be emailing parents, but if you feel you would like to attend, please email jloud6@eq.edu.au and if there are spaces available I will let you know.
Student Voice is one of the Inclusion Pillar’s strategic priorities. We have registered for the Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing Survey. This will be held in May and will require students to respond via an online survey, regarding their perception of their engagement and well-being at our school. It’ll be a great opportunity to acknowledge the work we have been doing with students, and also identify areas for further development.
Have you seen our new PBL signs around the school? They remind all our students, parents and staff of our Kookie rules- Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be A Learner.
From the Head of Department (Curriculum)

Faces of New Farm Art Show
Our Prep and Year 1 students have been working very hard with Ms Davis getting ready for our upcoming 2021 Faces of New Farm Art Show. All NFSS Parents and Carers are invited to visit our art display in the hall between 8:15-8:45am & 3:00-3:15pm daily, Monday 29th March – Wednesday 31st March.
A gold coin donation upon entry (basket will be at the door) is encouraged, in support of fundraising for art supplies and resources that support our program. An invitation will be emailed to all parents of Prep & Year 1 students, however all are welcome to appreciate the amazing artwork created by our lower school students!
Dance Extravaganza
Our energetic Year 3-6 students have been learning a choreographed routine with Vanessa from Creative Dance Industries and we can’t wait to see it! All Year 3-6 parents are invited to the hall on Tuesday 30th March. All Year 3-6 parents will receive an email detailing the times each cohort will be performing throughout the day. If you are attending on the day, please adhere to COVID requirements.
Harmony Day Parade
A reminder that NFSS will be celebrating our diversity during Harmony Week with a special assembly to be held at 9am in the hall, on Friday 19th March. Unfortunately, there will be no seating available to parents in the hall, however the Flag procession will be visible from the bark area. Several students have elected to walk behind a particular flag of significance, as they form part of a procession as they enter into the hall for assembly. Given the volume of students wishing to walk behind the Australian flag, we ask that these students attend the hall as part of our valuable audience. Students who have not identified with a particular cultural group are encouraged to wear orange.
The assembly will conclude at 9:45am and a reminder to parents to socially distance from students and each other, practise safe hand hygiene and not attend of unwell.

Staff Professional Development
Our NFSS year level leaders and Ms De Boer have attended professional development opportunities with Powerful Partnerships network recently. It is wonderful to see our teachers bringing their knowledge back to us regarding effective leadership.
2021 NAPLAN NEWS
NAPLAN is a nationwide measure through which parents, teachers, schools, education authorities, governments and the broader community can determine how well young Australians are developing the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for other learning and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community.
- NAPLAN tests are one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process. NAPLAN does not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance. A child’s teacher will have the best insight into the child’s educational progress. NAPLAN results do not measure overall school quality.
- NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are already learning through the school curriculum. Children can prepare for NAPLAN through learning the curriculum. On its own, NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for, and students are not expected to do so.
- The assessments allow parents to see how their child is progressing against national standards in literacy and numeracy and over time. Along with other school assessment reports, NAPLAN supports parents in discussing with teachers their child’s strengths and areas for improvement.
- NAPLAN results can assist teachers by providing additional information to support their professional judgement about students’ levels of literacy and numeracy attainment and progress.
- NAPLAN can support school improvement by enabling teachers to monitor their students’ progress over time against the national measure, to identify strengths and areas to improve in teaching programs, and to set goals in literacy and numeracy.
- Both paper-based NAPLAN and NAPLAN Online test the same range of skills in literacy and numeracy taught through curriculum content. Student results continue to be measured against the one NAPLAN assessment scale, and students answer the same number of questions in both NAPLAN tests – paper and online.
- Students and parents wishing to familiarise themselves with NAPLAN Online can visit the public demonstration site on the NAP website. Some past NAPLAN papers are also available.
- The number of adjustments available aim to encourage participation in NAPLAN Online for as many students as possible.

Why NAPLAN is moving to online
- All schools are to transition to NAPLAN Online by 2022, as the online format improves NAPLAN.
- NAPLAN Online provides a better assessment and more precise results.
- One of the main benefits of NAPLAN Online is that it uses tailored (or adaptive) testing. This means that students receive questions better suited to their abilities, giving them more opportunity to demonstrate what they know and can do.
- Feedback from students is that they find the online test more engaging.
- For more information about the move to online, visit the NAPLAN Online page of the NAP website
Research shows that parents generally accept the move to NAPLAN online and believe it will contribute to an overall improvement of NAPLAN.
In 2018 the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), which delivers NAPLAN, commissioned independent research into parent perceptions of NAPLAN, their understanding of its purpose and of the move to NAPLAN online. The research included a survey of 1,200 parents in all states and territories as well as 16 ninety-minute focus groups.
Findings from the research show:
The majority of parents (3 out of 5) believe that NAPLAN is valuable. NAPLAN is valued for providing parents with a snapshot of their child’s progress.
- Some negative views remained and parents noted a lack of familiarity with the format and content of NAPLAN tests.
- Parental attitudes toward NAPLAN are influenced by the way in which the school positions the tests.
- In general, parents accept the move to NAPLAN online. The main reason for supporting the move online is as it is seen as a natural progression.
- The majority of parents believe that moving NAPLAN online will improve NAPLAN and result in a more engaging experience for students.
- Parents with children who have already completed NAPLAN online expressed few concerns.
Read the Colmar Brunton: research findings in full.
ICT skills – part of the school curriculum
Students do not need to be computer experts to take the NAPLAN test online. Making sure students have computer skills is part of the school curriculum, and teachers will ensure students are familiar with the online test format and the device they will use.
The writing test is not about handwriting skills and NAPLAN Online is not about keyboarding skills. Year 3 students will continue to complete the writing assessment on paper.
To see the types of questions and interactive features of NAPLAN Online, try the NAPLAN Online public demonstration site, available on the NAP website.
Students with disability
NAPLAN Online has audio and visual alternative questions, including colour themes, that may be suitable for some students with disability.
For example, students:
- with hearing impairments receive proofreading questions (that do not depend on audio) to test their spelling rather than audio dictation items.
- with visual impairments are assisted within the platform by magnification and specially designed images, so that questions can be viewed more easily.
- who require particular contrast or colour themes access black text against a selection of five different colour backgrounds.
- receive rest breaks or extra time if required.
All questions are also keyboard accessible. This means that all students can access the online assessment without the use of a mouse or other pointing device. Using a mouse may be particularly challenging for students with motor impairments.
The Guide for schools to assist students with disability to access NAPLAN Online provides an overview of the process that teachers, in consultation with parents and carers, follow to assist students with disability.
Further adjustments will be included in NAPLAN Online each year to provide improved access for students with disability.
COVID FAQs
How does my school ensure any distancing or hygiene requirements are adhered to during NAPLAN testing, including cleaning of school devices?
Schools are supported by their respective state/territory governments to implement plans in relation to COVID-19, ensuring a safe environment for students and staff. Schools will give due consideration to the necessary distancing or hygiene requirements, including space between students and cleaning of shared devices. The measures will be directed by the requirements of COVID-safe plans in each jurisdiction. Schools may also review their test schedules to reduce the number of students in each test session and/or provide more time between tests, as necessary.
What happens if my child is sick or quarantined during NAPLAN testing?
For individual students who are absent at the time of testing, schools can organise for them to complete missed tests at another time during the testing window.
What happens if my school is closed during NAPLAN testing?
Students at schools that are closed during the test window, including the extended test security period, will not have an opportunity to sit the tests at a later date; however, schools may wish to utilise similar assessments (e.g. ACER PAT) to gauge student achievement. Students will be marked as absent and not receive NAPLAN results for any tests they are absent for.
Can NAPLAN tests be completed at home?
No. Students undertake NAPLAN testing at their school. Schools facing closures during the NAPLAN test window will need to contact their TAA to discuss alternative scheduling opportunities.

ANZAC Day author visit – Vicki Bennett
Author Vicki Bennett will be visiting the school in term 2, week 1 on the 20th April 2021 to talk to Year 2, 3 and 4 students about her new book, The Flying Angel.
‘A group of nurses are handpicked to rescue injured soldiers from the frontline of Papua New Guinea WW2, and transport them safely back home to Australia. Known for their courage and compassion, the soldiers call them the Flying Angels. A story inspired by the life of one remarkable nurse, Sister Marie Eileen Craig.’
She will also be sharing The Little Stowaway.
‘On a freezing cold Christmas night in 1918, a little French orphan came out of the fog and wandered into an Australian airmen's mess. With an uncertain past and an extraordinary future, this solitary boy’s journey stands as a shining example of the love between Australian and France.’
If you would like to purchase her books online before the author visit, students can bring them to the author visit for a signature from the author!
