Welcome Back to School
Welcome back to all students, families and staff. We are pleased to have enrolled 90 new Prep students and approximately 35 other students across Year 1 – 6. We also welcome a number of new staff members to our New Farm team, including Ms Krohn and Ms Dixon on Prep, Ms Campbell in lower literacy support, Ms Johnston on Year 2 and Mr Jones on Year 6. Increased enrolments will confirm a new classroom teacher tomorrow and I am working to recruit and appoint the new teacher as soon as possible. This will mean 3 straight Year 5 and 3 straight Year 6 classes. The priority at this stage is forming smaller class grouping and teachers will be consulted in forming new classes. We will also use data gathered from our 2022 end of year process which indicates compatible and non-compatible groupings.
Staffing Update
Deputy Principal Kay Bradley is absent on family leave until 17 Feb, with HOD Judy Loudon in the acting DP role for this period.
Swimming
Swimming lessons began this week for Years 1-6. In terms 1 & 4 our Physical Education lessons focus on swimming, with the exception of Prep who swim only in Term 4. Permissions and payments are required for participation. If you need any financial assistance for any events, please contact our Business Manager Jenny Deans on admin@newfarmss.eq.edu.au
Attendance
Every Day of school attendance counts and research tells us those students who attend 85% and higher are more likely to achieve better results and have better social networks among peers.
Arrival times – students should arrive near 8:30am. Our Schools Plus service uses our area until this time so if you are not attending Schools Plus, please do not arrive before 8:30am as there is no formal supervision before this time.
For late arrivals after 9am, Parents please remember to send your child to the office, where they can obtain a late slip to present to the teacher.
For early departure before 3pm, for an appointment or similar, parents must go to the office, sign their child out, take an early departure slip to the classroom, and present it to the teacher before collecting their child.
For absence such as illness, please ring through to the school office or email the school before 8:30am on absences@newfarmss.eq.edu.au .
For longer-term absences, such as family trip overseas for emergent reasons, please see the office staff and complete a submission for exemption. Please note holidays may not granted under ‘exemption’ and recorded as ‘holiday’.
Please also remember that regular attendance is paramount to high achievement.
Attendance + Effort = Achievement

Parent Representative and Class Email List
We are looking for volunteers to become Parent Representative for 2023. This role includes, but is not limited to:
being a central point of contact between teacher and parents
· providing clarification to parents on school events and messages
· building connections amongst parents e.g. playdate after school
· coordinating support where needed e.g. organise drop offs for a student in the event of a new baby,
· welcoming new families into the class.
Your parent rep will use a class email list. This list will be used by the class parent representatives to connect with parents. Please take a minute to indicate your intention to opt in or out of this list and to indicate if you would like to be Class Parent Rep for 2023.
- Daily Writing
Writing, by hand, on a regular basis is very important for our students. Providing stimuli and encouraging free writing has many benefits, including:
- Improving stamina
- Building creativity
- Providing a vehicle for ‘student voice’
- Linking to other areas of curriculum
- Targeting ‘on the spot’ intervention – whole class and individual
- Building student perception of themselves as writers
- Giving opportunities for handwriting – cursive script by end of year 3
Ask your child what they wrote about, or drew in Prep, today.
- Lunchtime Clubs
We are excited to offer the following lunchtime clubs during 2nd lunch; 1.20 p.m.- 1.40 p.m. At the moment the clubs are open to Yr1 -6.
We hope to offer some different options in term 2.

RWI SPELLING
Two years ago, we introduced Read Write Inc (RWI) Spelling to students in Yr 2 to Yr 6 and are continuing with this program this year. RWI Spelling is a robust, fast – paced, systematic spelling program that builds on the phonics knowledge learnt in RWI Phonics and teaches spelling rules. RWI Spelling provides us with a consistent approach to teaching spelling across our school.
The RWI Spelling program comprises of
- Practice books – books that are kept at school for students to work in. They contain partner, group and independent activities to consolidate understanding and practise and monitor student’s spelling.
- Log Books – books that students write challenging words in to learn at home for homework. Yr 3 and Yr 4 students use the same log book for 2 years and the Yr 5 and Yr 6 students use the same log book for 2 years.
- Online resources – used for whole class teaching and include short videos to teach new spelling rules.
Please ensure your child/ren look after their Log Books very carefully.
Please look out for your child’s Log Book coming home soon.

‘Name the Crane’ competition for Years 2 to 4 students
Just down the road, the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge is beginning to take shape. This is a Brisbane City Council project being delivered by Connect Brisbane (led by construction company BESIX Watpac). The bridge will connect the CBD with Kangaroo Point.
The world’s largest capacity tower crane, the 2480D heavy lift luffing crane has arrived on site – and it needs a name. Years 2 to 4 students are invited to participate in a ‘Name the Crane’ colouring competition.
Students have been given a colouring-in form and this needs to be completed by the student and signed by parents/guardians. The winning entry will receive a prize and will be invited to visit the project site.
The competition closes 17 March 2023.
