Excursions and Incursions – Emu Gully
This week, Wednesday 28th – Friday 30th August, Year 5 students and staff (Mrs Bradley, Ms Loudon, Ms Blackadder, Mr Fleming, and Mr Ramos) will be at Emu Gully camp. It was very unfortunate that the camp was unable to be held in 2020 so I am sure this year’s Year 5 students are very excited to be attending. Emu Gully is an outdoor adventure camp with activities allowing students to develop a greater understanding of the qualities of our ANZACs. The leadership messages help support students prepare for their leadership roles in 2022 as our Year 6 cohort.
Prep Enrolments
We have enrolled approximately 45 students for 2022. We generally enrol approximately 80-95 students and so we are anticipating quite a few more enrolments to come. I would encourage any families who have not yet submitted their applications to do so as soon as possible as this has impacts on staffing appointments and the formation of classes. For more information Click Here or alternatively please email enrolments@newfarmss.eq.edu.au
Mini Coders
Thank you to Mr Fenton and other City Cluster staff who have held this year’s Mini Coder groups here at New Farm. Their program has supported a range of Year 3 and 4 students. (See Mr Fenton’s section for more details)
Staff Update
From mid August Business Manager Elena Anderson will be on leave and we are currently in the process of recruiting a replacement for the remainder of the 2021 year. Mrs Boyes completes her return to full time work this week and I thank Mr Borg and Mrs Boyes for working closely to ensure a smooth transition for the Year 3 B class. Mr Borg will remain with New Farm SS in a relief role until the end of the year.

Playground Behaviour
Last week at assembly, I spoke to all the students about respectful playground behaviour. This follows some disappointing behaviour particularly relating to handball games. I have spoken to individual students and to particular year levels. Teachers have been emphasising our behaviour expectations and consequences, in particular around:
Respecting other students’ property and games.
Being aware of the rules before starting to play.
In relation to handball:
If a student hits or kicks the ball out of play they will have to retrieve it and sit out of play.
If a student can’t retrieve the ball, he/she will have to replace it.
If an ‘out’ call is made a player should respect the rules and if there is a dispute the majority decision will be upheld.
Students deliberately ruining games will be referred to Admin and will receive follow up consequences.
Teachers on duty will continue to actively supervise the playground.
Mini-Coders
As part of the City Cluster Mini-Festivals, our school is hosting 46 students from 12 different schools. Mr Fenton, Mr Curby (Brisbane Central SS) and Mrs Hird (Milton SS) have been running the Mini Coders program for students Year 3 and 4 students.
Students involved in the program have been part an Invention Squad. They have been using Lego Robotics to apply their engineering design skills to each step of the design process by defining a problem with success criteria, making different prototypes, establishing systematic testing procedures, analysing data to improve their solutions and describing why their solution is the best.
Rhea, Olive and Joshua have been representing New Farm and have highly enjoyed creating hoppers, rubbish grabbers and making stories with robots.

Term 3 Week 2 Focus: Be Respectful in All Areas
Windsor Park Interhouse Track Day
We were glad to have been able to have our Track Day last Friday at Windsor Park.
It was tremendous to be having this opportunity, the students competed enthusiastically and many were on a regular athletic track for the first time. Many thanks to the City North Little A’s and to committee member, Vanessa Vickery, for assisting in organising the venue.
The conditions were lovely for most of the morning. We appreciate the teachers and aides for their persistence later, through light and threatening rain to be able to finish the main events for selections to Districts. Moments after finishing the last of those we scrambled for extra cover as the rain set in. Consequently, we were unable to finish the scoring and present Age Champions, or the Inter-house trophy on the day. Congratulations to those who were successful in their events – our nominations will be given to the district according to the number of competitors we are allowed and information and permissions will be distributed this week.
The Trophy and Age Champions will be announced on assembly after the Year 5 classes return from camp.

Parents and carers are welcome on school sites. Parents' and carers' contact details are recorded in OneSchool and can be used for contact tracing by Queensland Health if needed. NFSS also has the Check in Qld QR code for all visitors to the site.
All other visitors need to adhere to school visitor and sign in arrangements.
Covid safe practices apply to all adults on school sites. These include physical distancing between adults, not exceeding occupant density limits for rooms, staying home if sick and regular COVID-safe hygiene measures.
Schools should encourage adults to avoid congregating in or around the school, in the car park, at drop off and pick up, outside classrooms or at the school gate.
Are Parents allowed on school sites?
Except when there’s lockdown restrictions in place, parents and carers are welcome on state school sites. However, adults should avoid congregating in or around the school, at drop-off and pick-up time, in the car park, outside classrooms and at the school gate.
When there are restrictions in place that require the wearing of face masks, advice regarding wearing of face masks should be followed.
Schools operate under ‘Covid normal’ conditions when there are no COVID-19 restrictions in place.
Please do not visit a school if you are sick. Anyone who is showing signs of illness or feeling unwell must stay at home, contact their doctor or call 13HEALTH (13 43 25 84) and get tested .
Do schools need to have the check in QLD app?
Queensland state schools may choose (but are not required) to use the Check In Qld app for school functions and events to collect attendees’ contact information electronically.
There is no need for schools to obtain parents’ and carers’ contact details if this information is already on record and able to be provided to Queensland Health if required for contact tracing.
