2021 Prep Enrolments – Now Enrolling
To date we have now interviewed and enrolled over 60 new preppies for 2021 school year, with a further 12 to be interviewed in Term 4. If you know of any families who have a preppie, please urge them to get their enrolments completed and submitted as early as possible in term 4 so as to secure an interview time. At this point, it seems likely we will form 4 prep classes but we will have to monitor over the coming weeks.
Devices in School
After reviewing our school’s ICT and internet agreement and liaising with school staff and the P&C, I have decided that Smartwatches (including Spacewatches and Applewatches) will not be permitted to be used and worn during school times. Our school ICT and internet agreement will be updated accordingly to provide greater clarity for these new devices.
All students are welcome to use standard watches and fitness trackers which do not connect to the internet or make phone calls/send messages.
Mobile phones and smartwatches will continue to be stored safely at the office during school times. We are very pleased with this current process and the students are very responsible when handing in and collecting their personal devices.
We appreciate your support with this issue.
Curriculum
Thank you to all families for supporting this year’s P&C Obstathon fundraiser which will ensure funds go directly to supporting the school’s Art’s program. The Arts is been a key focus area for 2020 and 2021.
In our final week of term 3 teachers will collaborate with colleagues and HOD Melinda Norman to develop our school’s three levels of planning requirements for term 4. The dedication and attention to planning requirements has meant the alignment to the Australian Curriculum is clear and all subjects of The Arts (Music, Dance, Drama, Media Arts and Visual Arts) are comprehensively implemented.
Book Fair
This week we are holding our Scholastic Arctic Adventure Book Fair ‘Snow Much Too Read’. Congratulations to Mrs Lamb, Ms Chambers and Mr Fenton for the work they have done in creating a fun, welcoming atmosphere in our library. I am sure by the response we have had so far, the children are really enjoying reading their new books. Parents, thank you for helping out and understanding that online payments are the mode this year.
COVID Update
The 3 main points for us all to adhere to, to help prevent the spread of COVID19 in our community, are:
- Social Distancing
- Wash Hands regularly
- Get tested if you develop any symptoms or feel unwell
Shine
Due to COVID we have held this year’s Shine talent show as online heats. Mr Chapman has done a wonderful job organising all the student acts and encouraging voting for the online heats. Next week our finals will be held in school hall with Judges, staff and students watching. Unfortunately parents are not permitted this year. It is sure to be a wonderful showcase of the talent at New Farm. Thank you to P&C President David Armstrong for attending as guest judge and donating a wonderful prize of a ‘Junior Actor’s Course’ valued at $180 for this year’s Shine Winner.

Learning Walks
This term, myself, Dr McGrath and Ms Norman have been lucky enough to engage in Learning Walks, around the school. This is an opportunity to visit classrooms during normal lessons and to talk to students about their learning. These Learning Walks are based on the work of renowned Canadian academic Lyn Sharratt.
These visits take a snapshot of what the students are thinking. The questions are framed to capture the students’ feedback at that moment in time.
We ask three randomly chosen students the following:
What are you learning?
How are you doing?
How do you know?
How can you improve?
Where do you go for help?
At a later time, we meet with the classroom teacher, to discuss the responses. This leads to reflection, for the teacher, on the learning intentions, feedback and next steps.
- Classes 2021
A reminder that communication with the school about 2021 class placements, is through the online Schoolzine form. This will provide you with an opportunity to share important information relating to your child’s learning, personality clashes and important family information. Parent input is welcomed, but is not essential.
N.B. Parents cannot request a particular teacher for 2021
Information is treated confidentially
Although we consider all information, there is no guarantee it will be actioned.
Information will only be accepted via this Schoolzine form, until week 2 of term 4.

Kids from New Farm State School Flood Local Attractions!
A large group of year six students from New Farm State School flood local attractions displaying excellent behaviour along the way.
These groups went the following attractions: New Farm Park in New Farm, Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in the fig tree pocket and the GOMA and Brisbane Art Gallery in south bank. All 3 of these attractions are popular among Brisbane citizens!
These students missed out on a trip to Canberra, while teachers scrambled to find a substitute. They resorted to 3 fun filled days. From boat rides to appreciating marvellous artwork, these students touched all aspects of fun education!
In conclusion year 6 students of NFSS had a blast at these 3 action-packed excursions.

New Farm State School Year 6 Excursion
The seniors of NFSS have been wandering around Brisbane. They have been to many places, Lone Pine Sanctuary, The Art Gallery, GOMA and New Farm Park.
Last week on Thursday, 2 bloggers were filming NFSS senior students, doing many activities. They introduced a girl named Isobel and she told them about her day. "Today has been a great experience. We have played volleyball, softball, a frisbee game, netball and so much more! My favourite game was a game where you had two teams. Each person in each team had a pool noodle. When the referee blew the whistle, you would 'charge' at the other team and try to touch their shoes with the pool noodle. If you got touched with the pool noodle on your shoes you would go to the side of the field, when there was one person left on the field that person won." Now that day sounds fun! Let us go on to the following week.
On Monday, the NFSS senior groups went to Lone Pine! One of the seniors posted a piece of writing about her day, and it went a bit like this. "Hey guys! Isobel here! Today I went to Lone Pine! We caught two boats to get there! When we arrived, we got to feed the Kangis! (Kangaroos). After that, we went to see the dingoes, which were adorable! Then we went to see some Tasmanian devils! Of course, we went to see the Koalas, and they were motion less! Ha-ha! So far Lone Pine has been my favourite trip!" Sounds like those Kangaroos (or should I say Kangis!) were hungry! Now for the last excursion... GOMA and the Art Gallery!
On Wednesday, two days after Lone Pine, this stunning group of seniors went to GOMA and the Art Gallery. The security cameras caught Isobel on her trip. This is what we saw. "Aww Man! We must do a work sheet on this excursion! However, I am happy we get to go to GOMA first! Wow, we get to design our own T-shirt with a sign saying something about climate change! That was fun! Now where on to the Art Gallery. This art is amazing! However, the workbook is so long! (In the afternoon) I finished the workbook! Yay! Today was a good experience with all the art."

School kids explore Brisbane
Over the course of one week, the year sixes of New Farm State School journeyed across Brisbane in three separate excursions. “Exploring our backyard” as stated by a year-six teacher. The students ventured to multiple locations such as New Farm Park, Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, the Gallery Of Modern Art and the Brisbane Art Museum. The children took the Citycat and displayed excellent behaviour when on public transport and when travelling in two lines. Both students and teachers were said that the yearly excursion to Canberra for the year sixes was cancelled due to Covid-19 but were glad that they could experience the three activities instead.
Personally, the activity that I enjoyed the most was the trip to New Farm Park. I liked it because the sport activities were really fun and creative as they were designed by the teachers. There was Softball, Ultimate Frisbee, Volleyball, Tribe Wars, Matball, Ball-throwing game, touch Football, Soccer and a custom-made game called Zing, Zang, Zowie. The park experience was fun and exciting and I would hope we do it again.

Science Week 2020: The Deep Blue Innovation for the Future of our Oceans
Recently, we celebrated National Science Week at New Farm State School. The theme this year was all about engaging students in ocean science and supporting young people to be active and aware of science-driven research.
We have many interesting science projects underway across all year levels – from understanding our impact on the ocean, marine life and its importance in the eco-system. To get our students active and engaged in our environment through science, the year 6 students are exploring environmental conditions that affect the growth and survival of living things, including the best conditions that grow yeast and mould.

Isobel (6B) and Emelia (6B) have been having fun exploring the characteristics of climate such as temperature, wind, humidity and precipitation and looking at the effects these elements have on living things.

Top Borrower of the Week
Our top Borrower for Term 3 week 7 was Hugo S in 5H and for week 8 it is Frank Bragg in 5B!
Hugo and Frank are both big readers in the library and love to explore non-fiction and fiction books.
Well done and congratulations to Hugo and Frank for your huge enthusiasm for reading!
Borrowing for the holidays
This week is a good time to return all overdue books so in week 10 students can borrow new books for the holidays.
Parents, if you can have a good look at home in your book shelf for any library books and return them to the library, your child can enjoy borrowing more books next week for the holidays!
Happy Reading,
Mrs Lamb
Thank you to all the students that entered Shine this year. We had more great performances than I have ever see. Everyone that entered is a winner and has shown great courage. The following students/act were the best of the best. They will perform on stage in the school hall at the Shine final for 2020 on Wednesday in Week 10 of term 3.
The 2 winners from 5 heats were:
Heat 1: Magnus W. and Camille B (5/6C)
Heat 2: Thalia K. (6Z) and Claudia W. (6B)
Heat 3: Erin K. (6B) and The Andersons (4W&5H)
Heat 4: Harry Potter in 99 seconds (3D) & Puppy Corns (4C)
Heat 5: H-Factor (2R) & A. B. Piano (3T)
I (Mr. Chapman) have given a WILD CARD entry to Mika R (5/6C) for an awesome performance in the heats. All finalist should keep practicing. This is going to be a great final for 2020. See you all in week 10. Trophies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd and ribbons for all finalist will be awarded on the day.
Year 3 visited the Howard Smith Wharves on Wednesday to experience the large scale processes of composting, recycling and food preparation. The students were encouraged to actively take part and gained knowledge to share about school based recycling.
Kind Regards
Mrs Aimée Schouppe
The African drum group will start up again in term 4. This is an inclusive and fun activity. Due to limited numbers of drums Mrs Louden and Mr. Chapman have selected 28 students that will be offered a spot in the group. More spots may open up. Students that have been chosen will have a letter sent home to parents. Parents must only sign the return slip if they do not wish their child to participate. If some of the original 28 students do not join there will be some extra spots given. This is an exciting and fun project led by Mr. Chapman. Get your rhythm on.
1, Pedestrians children and adults – WAIT for the supervisor’s whistle to walk. (Two very late braking vehicles this afternoon when pedestrians has already stepped onto roadway)
2, Drivers – comply with TURN ARROW when leaving Heal Street.
NFSS P&C is excited to present the student Obstathon
Thursday, September 17, 2020
This is a fun physical challenge for all NFSS students and an opportunity to raise some money to support the school!
When: Thursday 17 September
Where: NFSS oval
What: Each class has 40 minutes to complete as many laps of an obstacle course as they choose. Obstacles will include Monkey Bars – Balance Beam – Inflatable Course – Tyre Run – Net Crawl – Rings and more!
(Watch out for the BONUS obstacle! Can you do it without touching the ground?)
Who: Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, this event is for students only. Sorry, but parents won’t be able to watch this time.
What to wear: House coloured shirt, remember your hat and sunscreen.
Why: The aim of the event is to raise $6,000 to support the new Arts curriculum for our students at NFSS. We value the importance of the arts in our school every day. We believe a rich arts program contributes to all aspects of a child’s development, including their physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and creative selves. It provides a safe place for children to learn about and express their feelings and moods; understand the feelings of others; and practise social skills and collaboration. Through the arts children can express their thoughts, ideas, and opinions. It gives them a way to communicate which builds confidence and fosters a sense of self - of who they are - and wellbeing.
Sponsorship: Students are sponsored by donations of a fixed amount for participating in the Obstathon. Each child will receive a form to record their sponsors and donations collected. Please return the sponsorship form with the sponsorship money to the P&C volunteers under A block before school 8:30am to 9am from Monday, 14 September through to Thursday, 17 September.
Prizes:
- Students win a point for their House each time a lap of the obstacle course is completed. You may win extra points for your House or special Kookie stamps for excellent teamwork, showing support for friends and generally demonstrating school values. There will be a House colour free dress day for the highest points awarded on the day.
- The class that raises the most money receives a pizza lunch.
- The House that raises the most money receives a disco in the Hall at lunch time.
Sponsorship forms can be downloaded above, and hard copies will be handed out in class tomorrow.
Signed permission forms are to be returned to the class teacher by Friday 11/9/20.
We have our P&C meeting tonight 6.00pm in the Library. Due to the 10 person limit I am asking for RSVP to me at secretary@nfsspandc.com.au if anyone would like to attend via videoconference I can email a link.
