Supporting Children through Big Milestones: Five Tips
When children reach a big milestone, like daycare, pre-school or school, it can be exciting. For many parents and carers, it can also mean challenges. Positive parenting strategies can help make the process smoother.
As children become more independent, parents and carers often feel a range of emotions, from worry to joy. Learning to pay attention to those reactions – and focusing on staying calm and optimistic – can help children have a better experience.
Knowing what to expect helps children feel more confident. Connecting with educators and other families, orientation days and other activities can help them adjust well.
Daily routines help families feel calm and organised. A good first step is to prepare for the day ahead, the night before. Traditions within the family, no matter how small, can also be a buffer for unfamiliar experiences.
Listening actively helps during times of adjustment. Children feel valued when parents or carers give them their full attention, which fosters lifelong communication skills.
No matter their age, having realistic expectations helps. New experiences are sometimes tough, but staying patient and positive will help everyone get through and thrive.
Parents and carers have lots of opportunities to help children learn how to adjust to new experiences positively.

It was a fun interactive experience that the students really enjoyed.

The Look Out Program is a Pedestrian and Traffic Interaction program that “looks out” for our kids – the implication is one of care and concern. The Look Out program assists the school to help manage the flow of traffic in our 2 minute pick up zone on Annie Street, in an orderly, safe way. The Look Out Monitors are volunteers / representatives of the School. Please be respectful and courteous.
We're proud to announce that our school has been recognized by Grow It Local as the co-winner of the National School Garden of the Year.
To celebrate this award, we had the honour of hosting the Co-Founder of Grow It Local, Darryl Nichols, as well as the Minister of Science, Leanne Linard, and the Minister of Education, Grace Grace in the Garden Tuesday this week.
A heartfelt thank you goes to Julie and Louise from our parent community. Their dedication in planning the event and their year-round efforts have truly transformed our gardens into the marvel they are today.
Beyond their beauty, our gardens provide a tangible context for our science and design curriculum, enhancing the learning experience for our students.
Grow It Local Award:
NFSS won the national Grow It Local Award in the category of “School Garden - growing the future”. The judges were PAUL WEST (chef, food grower, TV and radio presenter, and Grow It Local co-founder) & COSTA GEORGIADIS (Gardening Australia host and Australia's favourite gardener). We tied in first place with Clovelly Public School in Waverley, NSW.
The comments said: "Costa and I mulled over this one for a very long time, we went back, we went forth, we went for a peppermint tea and then came to the conclusion that we couldn’t choose just one winner in this hotly contested category. Both of these groups of young go-getters are taking their learning outdoors, getting their hands in the soil and making the world a happier, healthier and more delicious place."

Parent Information Session - Being Brain Aware at NFSS
Calling all parents and carers!!!
Join Mrs Eurell for a chat and to learn about the 3R's at NFSS.
Wednesday 6th September at 6pm in the NFSS Library.
Last week in Peer Support children discussed skills and how to communicate their feelings and needs to others. The children discussed skills they use when participating in a variety of activities.
When children understand they already have many of the skills needed to succeed, they can feel more confident when trying something new. The children were asked to identify events which trigger different feelings. Encourage your child to remember the skills they have used in one activity when trying something new.
Also encourage your child to communicate their feelings and needs.
This week in Peer Support children will revise what they have learned about resilience and discuss the people who show them support. Through a story the children identify where the character has used her personal qualities, strengths and skills to help her overcome challenges. They identify times when she needed support to continue. The children discuss a range of challenges and determine the best person to approach for support. The children consolidate the protective factors for resilience by revising their own strengths and skills and identifying 5 people they can go to for support.
Remind your child of their qualities and skills and encourage them to ask for help in challenging situations.

What a fantastic Sunday it was as we gathered to witness the culmination of hard work and dedication at Opti-MINDS! Six teams, representing years 3 to 5, took the stage at UQ, showcasing their talents in a variety of categories. The journey leading up to this day has been nothing short of inspiring - with lunchtime meetings, after-school practices, and even weekend sessions.
Teams had the opportunity to choose from four captivating categories: Science/Engineering, Language Literature, Social Science, and Media Communications. The level of commitment and creativity shown in each category was truly commendable.
A huge shoutout to Team 1 – Da-Raging Squirrels, who were honoured with the Spirit of Optiminds award in the Science/Engineering category. Congratulations to Lola, Oscar, Eli, Ryo, and Quinn for their outstanding achievement! Team 6 – The Cook Kids, was awarded honours (2nd place) in their Media Communication category. Congratulations to Luke, Misha, Ethan and Orlando. And, of course, a round of applause for all the participants, who gave it their all and truly embodied the spirit of OptiMINDS.
As we reflect on this wonderful event, let's celebrate the passion and dedication that each student brought to the table. Here's to more exciting journeys ahead and the growth of these young minds as they continue to shine brightly! We can’t wait for 2024.
