P&C News
Trivia Night - Thank you to all our parents who have contributed to this year’s Trivia Night being held this Saturday 20 August, especially to key organisers Natalie Chin, Michelle Logan, Kelly D’Alessandro and Tania Shapiro for all their many hours of preparation for the event. It is sure to be another fun filled night and a great fundraiser for our school community.
Year 6 Student Legacy Project – Thank you to P&C for supporting this year’s project with a donation towards the purchase of river stones which Year 6 students will have engraved with their names and then embedded into the Little Farm dry creek bed. Thank you to Ms Zayn Al Abidin, Year 6 project captains and the Kelvin Grove Year 11 Mentors who supported the project.
Workplace Health and Safety
Thank you to everyone for your patience with our restricted grounds. The students and staff have done remarkably well with the limitations on play spaces as works are in process. At our facilities meeting this week we have the following update:
- Memorial / C Block area – over the next 2 days the area will remain fenced off as concrete from under C Block is removed. Once this is complete the fence will be reduced to only around the C Block footprint. The artificial turf will be laid Thursday and Friday next week and then the area will be completed and reopened.
- The covered walkway between A Block and B Block – fencing will be reduced today to ensure only the footprint of the walkway is fence and this will open up the playspace for students. The electricals are due for completion at the end of next week and then final fencing will be removed.
- The prep playspace – this is nearing completion with ground covers now underway. This area is also linked to the opening of the new promenade and school pick up zone area in Annie Street which is also nearing completion. We anticipate this full area will be completed and open for students by beginning of term 4.
- T Block – currently the area is fenced as it is being dismantled and will be sectioned and craned out on Saturday 20 August with the Heal Street area scheduled for closure during this time. Neighbours have been informed.
- Oval – following the removal of T Block, the crane will be removed from the oval and work will then begin on the resurfacing of the oval. Unfortunately, at this stage, it is likely the oval will be out of use for the majority of term 4. However, the rest of the areas will then we opened up and available for use.
Newsletter Term 4 – As of term 4 we will be publishing the newsletter once per fortnight. The main modes of communication will remain the website, newsletter and schoolzine emails, and dojo. If you wish to provide feedback on the change in term 4, please email newsletter@newfarmss.eq.edu.au

Active School Travel
Walk to School Bus
Every Friday is Active School Travel Day at New Farm and our school continues to see more families actively travelling each week. Well done to all our families and staff for continuing to support our Active School Travel program. Last week, saw 64% of students actively travelling to school. Congratulations to our most active classes 5B, who won the trophy this week!
Why not join our Walk to School Bus? This supervised fun group, walks to school every Friday and meets at New Farm Library, between 8 a.m. and 8.15 a.m.
Technology at School
Over the past few weeks, we have had a number of incidents where students have used a BYOD device to communicate with parents and friends during school time. We also have had students responding to messages received from parents.
Such communication is at best disruptive to learning and can cause distress to students and parents. An example would be if a child is having a friendship issue, or is feeling unwell and messages a parent who is possibly not able to help.
It is very important that any communication comes through the office and that students use their device for learning only.
Our staff are addressing these issues with their students, we will be reviewing out digital citizenship lessons and auditing settings over the next few weeks.
Group chats that students are involved in outside of school are also becoming more common. It is very important that these are supervised by parents. If there is inappropriate content that is ongoing and involves New Farm students, we may be able to become involved if it is impacting school life. The school may consider consequences for specific students.
Key messages to parents:
- Actively monitor your child’s online activity.
- If you read or see content in a group chat, be confident in getting involved.
- If you have to contact your student at school, call the office.
- Reinforce the message, that using a BYOD for personal communication during school time, is not allowed.
- Contact the school if you believe a group chat has become inappropriate and will impact students’ learning.
Science of Glass
This week we are celebrating National Science Week at New Farm State school. Each year, there is a theme, and this year’s theme is GLASS.
National Science Week is Australia’s annual opportunity to meet scientists, discuss the hot topics, do science and celebrate its cultural and economic impact on society.
We have been running sessions out of the new STEM room where we will be learning all about glass. Classes that attend learn about the properties of glass, and how it is made and used. In addition, students experience the making of sugar glass.
The festival is proudly supported by the Australian Government; partners CSIRO, the Australian Science Teachers Association and the ABC; and media sponsor Cosmos.
National Science Week 2022 will run from 13-21 August. Event details can be found at www.scienceweek.net.au.
R U OK Day
- R U OK? Day will be held on Thursday 8 September 2022.
- Visit the RUOK website to get involved.
- It’s our national day of action when we remind Australians that every day is the day to ask, ‘are you OK?’ and start a meaningful conversation whenever they spot the signs that someone they care about might be struggling with life.
COVID safe requirements
Who is required to wear a face mask?
Face masks are not required to be worn in Queensland, including at schools and early childhood centres, except for close contacts or anyone following isolation requirements for confirmed cases of COVID-19. More information is available on the face masks page.
What are schools doing to keep our children safe?
Schools and early childhood services have a number of measures in place to create a COVID safe environment for our children and staff, including hygiene measures, cleaning, physical distancing and ventilation. More information is available on the creating a COVID safe environment page.
Who is required to be vaccinated for COVID-19?
There is no longer a requirement for workers attending an education setting, including parents, carers, workers and volunteers, to be vaccinated for COVID-19. State schools do not need to verify the vaccination status of visitors, including workers or volunteers, and the Check In Qld app is not required to be used in schools.
