IMPORTANT NOTICES
What if my child is unwell?
Any child who is showing signs of illness or feeling unwell, must stay at home.
If a child is showing signs of illness at school, the school will contact the parent or carer to collect the child.
Inclusion Pillar
This week a number of staff are attending Queensland Association of Special Education Leaders conference. This conference focuses on creating connections among schools and opportunities to showcase excellent practices in Inclusive education. Over the 3 days of the conference 8 of our staff will participate in a range of practical workshops to enhance their knowledge and gain ideas to implement across our whole school community.
100 Days Of School Celebration
Congratulations to our Preppies for reaching their first 100 days of schooling. It was such a fun day for the students Tuesday as teachers and teacher aides organised a range of hands on activities to celebrate the 100 day milestone. Thank you to Ms Burridge, Ms Navarro, Mr Nash and Ms Dunne.
Year 5 Emu Gully Camp
Last week with some very cold weather our Year 5 students headed off to the annual adventure camp near Gatton. This is a fabulous outdoor camp with some challenging team and individual activities. The students should be commended for their excellent behaviour and team spirit. Thank you to Mr Lawrence, Mrs Baker, Mr Fleming and Ms McLeod for supporting the students during the camp and spending time away from their own families.
Staff Update
Ensuring we have adequate levels of staff for our classes has been particularly challenging this term with high incidents of illness. As this is also happening for all the inner-city schools, it has impacted on sourcing relief staff. I appreciate your patience and understanding with the ongoing changes in staffing. We are doing everything in our power to ensure continuity of curriculum delivery and maintaining good routines for our students.
Health
As a state school we follow directives from Education Queensland and ultimately Queensland Health. The main query I continue to get from parents is about the wearing of masks. Following is directing from our recent advice to schools:
New Farm State School is now taking 2023 Prep enrolment enquiries.
Please head to the Enrolments tab on our website (Enrolments) for more information. If you have any enquiries please contact the school by email at enrolments@newfarmss.eq.edu.au or call our office on 3358 7333.

Second Step
The focus of Second Step lessons, this term, is Emotion Management. Students have been learning Calm Down strategies. I’ve included a summary of the Calm Down language used in class. It’s really helpful if students can use some of the same language at home.
It’s okay to have strong feelings. But when you have strong feelings, it can be hard to think about what to do. You can get back in control by calming down. The first step is to use a stop signal to catch your own attention and to tell yourself to stop. You might say “Chill out!” “Stop!” or “Relax!” Next use your feeling detective skills to name your feeling. When you recognize your feelings, the thinking part of your brain can start to manage them. Take a moment to decide what stop signal you will use.
When you have a strong feeling, it’s hard for your brain to think. After you use your stop signal and name your feeling, you’re ready to calm down! You can calm down by doing some slow deep belly breathing, counting, or using positive self-talk. Think for a moment about your favourite Way to Calm Down. Remember to use it this week if you need to. Calming down helps you think clearly!
Using our Calming-Down Steps helps us be better learners! There are many opportunities to practice your calming-down skills at school. You may have a strong feeling when you have to wait, or when you make a mistake, or when you have trouble finishing a difficult task. These are perfect moments to practice using your stop signal, naming your feeling, and calming down. When staff and students at our school calm down our emotions, it helps us all learn.
Active School Travel – Now on Fridays
Park and Stride
You’ve probably heard of ‘Park and Ride’, but what about ‘Park and Stride’?
Our Active School Travel program encourages students to walk, cycle, scoot, car pool and catch public transport to and from school, but some parents still need to drive their children to school as part of their journey to work or other activities. Or you may live a long distance from the school and can’t actively travel all the way from home.
Even though you might need to drive to school, you can still participate in our Active School Travel program by walking or riding PART of the way. Use our Active Travel map to find your Park and Stride starting point. Make sure it’s at least a few blocks away so your child can put their hand up in class to say they walked or rode on their active travel day.
Park and Stride allows everyone to be part of New Farm School! Active School Travel is one of the easiest ways to incorporate physical activity into everyday life for all children.
Even walking or riding a short way sets the pathway for a healthy, active lifestyle.
AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM
All Qld State Schools plan, teach, assess and report against the Achievement Standards and Content Descriptors with the Australian Curriculum. Students are taught using this national curriculum, and teachers collect evidence regarding student’s capabilities against these standards. Assessments are moderated across the year level and the Brisbane City Cluster, so that there is a consistent approach to making an on-balanced judgement for End of Semester Reports. ‘C’ results are at the Australian Curriculum standard for the year level and a result to be acknowledged. Of course, we strive to have students achieve above year level standard, but sometimes the evidence does not currently exist for that judgement to be made.
Our Semester 1, 2022 results to be celebrated include overall 13.8% of students receiving As, 49.2% of students receiving Bs, and 34.6% of students receiving Cs. Recently our Assistant Regional Director discussed our increase in C-A results for students with disabilities. This is also an area to be celebrated as Differentiated Teaching and Learning sits at the peak of the School Improvement Hierarchy.
If you would like further information regarding our curriculum please-
- Visit the australiancurriculum.edu.au website
- Visit our school’s website ‘Curriculum’ tab
- Review your child’s year level Term Overviews
- Contact your Class Teacher or our Head of Department Curriculum, Judy Loudon
PLAYGROUP PROGRAM
We are extending the Transition to Prep Playdate Program to commence later this term. Invitations will be sent to local Early Childhood Education Centres and shared via the School Newsletter and DoJo. This will be a once per week 1.5hr program (9:30-10:45 for program and 10:45-11:15 pack up). Our Teacher Aide, Jo Keehan has successfully run this program for many years and it has been recognised by parents to be a valuable part of their child’s transition to Prep. We are looking for a parent/group of parents who may be willing to provide their time each week to support this program. They will be mentored by Jo Keehan and Judy Loudon (HOD Curriculum). Please email admin@newfarmss.edu.au if you are interested in helping out with this initiative.
TRANSITION TO PREP PARENT SURVEY
A Transition to Prep Parent Survey was distributed in Term 2. The results included-
- 7% of children were supported well by the school.
- 5% of children transitioned very well and mostly well
- Email and Class DoJo were the most important source of information
- Enrolment interview session was the most frequently referred to transition activity.
- Challenges included COVID restrictions and full days

Book Week 2022
Book Week will be in week 7 Monday 22 August this term!! We will have the annual book parade, reading in the garden and an author visit.
Author Visit
Dannika Peterson and Megan Forward will co-present the Scribbly Gum Workshop based on their new title ‘Scribbly Gum Secrets’, on Friday 26th August for Year 1 – Year 3.
“Their interactive workshops foster creativity and ecological awareness for children in a gentle and joyful way. Dannika and Megan share why & how nature inspires them in their work, encouraging curiosity, hypothesising, problem solving, team work and questioning. Then it’s time to get creative with a nature inspired art activity.”
Other book week activities for all year levels will be announced closer to the date.
Happy Reading,
Mrs Lamb
