What if my child is unwell?
Any child who is showing signs of illness or feeling unwell, must stay at home.
If a child is showing signs of illness at school, the school will contact the parent or carer to collect the child.
Drills
As part of our routine emergency drills we will be conducting a lockdown drill this week. These drills give us regular opportunities to review protocols we would need, in the highly unlikely event of having to ‘lockdown’ in classrooms and office spaces.
NAPLAN Testing
Thanks to Mr Curby and the year 3 and 5 teachers for providing such smooth, stress free access to the NAPLAN testing. Students have responded very well to the online platforms.

The P&C will meet on the 3rd Tuesday of every month in A block at 6 p.m. and welcome all parents and caregivers to coming along. Watch out for further communication from the P&C via website and dojo.

Innovation - 2022 Premier's Coding Challenge
This term, some of our students have begun designing their projects for the Premier's Coding Challenge #digitalfuturesqld (education.qld.gov.au). Primary aged students from Year 3 and up are challenged to create an interactive game or app that represents the future.
Students will focus on a topic (e.g. transportation in the future) and a user group to design their digital solutions around. While students will have a short amount of time each week during morning tea with the Innovation Coach to work on their projects, we encourage students to continue their work at home between meetings. We also encourage parents/caregivers to get involved.
Apps can be designed and coded using App Lab | Code.org. This is a Java based platform and will require more advanced coding skills.
Games can be coded using Microsoft MakeCode Arcade, Sprite Lab | Code.org or Scratch - Imagine, Program, Share (mit.edu). Each platform uses visual/block-base coding, which is often more intuitive for young coders. The Year 3 and Year 5 students are learning to use Code.org and MakeCode Arcade, respectively, for their Digital Technology unit this year.
Premiers Reading Challenge
The Premiers Reading Challenge has begun!
For a student to complete the challenge, they must read or experience a book with a parent, the allocated number of books for their year level, during the reading period.
Students may pick up a form from the library or print one from here: Student reader record form.
Completed forms to be returned to the library to Mrs Lamb by the end of August.
New Library!
I am very excited to let you know that New Farm State School will have a brand new library in Term 3!
To assist with the big move, student class borrowing time will cease at the end of week 4.
Students may still visit the library for games and quiet reading until the end of term 2:
All students - 8:30 – 8:45am
Lower School – 11:15-11:40am
Upper School – 12:50 – 1:10pm
Now is a good time to find those library books that are hiding at home and return them to the library so we can get organised and start packing!
Don’t forget, students still have access to the EQ Digital Library through SORA to borrow ebooks and audio books. Try out these always available reads on SORA available through to August.
Students only need their MIS login. No password is required.
Happy Reading,
Mrs Lamb
Walk Safely To School Day - NFSS event Thursday 19 May
WE’RE TAKING IT IN OUR STRIDE ON Thursday 19 MAY 2022
Well it’s that time of year again when our school seriously starts talking about walking!
Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around. And although walking all the way to school isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to figure out how you can build a walk into your family’s daily routine.
You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by:
• Walking with them the whole way to school
• If they get the bus or train, walk past your usual stop and get on at the next stop
• If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the rest of the way.
Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like
obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also gives you a great
opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic.
Remember, Active Kids are Healthy Kids so get planning your own Walk Safely to School Day journey for Thursday 19 May 2022!

Building a register of volunteers and ensuring helpers for the tuckshop
We know our school community is diverse and talented. Please consider registering as a volunteer using this form and tell us how you can help. It can be as little or as much as you want. It will only take two-three minutes to complete.
Helping out on Polling Day 21 May 2022: Cake and Sweets' Stall donations and help with the BBQ
The Lions' Club will be helping with a BBQ on Polling Day and we are calling on school families to donate baked goods and lollies for a Cake and Sweets Stall. You can help by donating lollies for lolly bags or by making cakes and sweets. We will also need helpers on the day serving, setting up and packing up from 7am-1pm.
Please let us know if you can help at this link. Donations can be dropped off from 2.30pm on Friday 20 May or early Saturday morning on polling day.
Tuckshop is open for Prep- year 6 on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
Orders close at 9am and are all online through flexi-schools.
AGM Update
There was fantastic participation in the New Farm State School P&C AGM. Over 40 members signed-up! Importantly all key positions were filled and the new committee consists of:
Lyne Moore as Secretary
Dahna Gallantree as Treasurer
Tania Shapiro as Vice President
Fiona Caniglia as President.
Thank you to the P&C Executive
The outgoing P&C Executive has done an amazing job weathering two years of COVID with significantly reduced opportunities to gather the school community and raise funds for key school improvements. As we start to emerge more and more, we will take the foundations they have laid for us this year and work with the whole P&C and school to bring forward opportunities to get together, build our school community and have fun. On behalf of the new committee we thank Louise and the P&C Executive for the huge responsibility they have shouldered. There will be more opportunities to recognise their efforts as we find our feet as the new Executive over the coming weeks.
Next steps for the P&C
Our next steps include:
- Careful handover from the outgoing committee to ensure a smooth transition
- Pinning down each sub-committee and its membership (we are already part of the way there)
- Planning for fund-raising fun on election day at the school polling booth
- Helping the Swim Club prepare early for a bumper term in Term 3
- Getting regular communications out to the school about how they can connect with the P&C and get involved (a little or a lot)
- Building a register of volunteers from across the school so we know who can help and how
- Making sure the Tuckshop's transition to the new convenor succeeds and we have enough volunteers.
The next P&C meeting
Everyone is welcome to attend:
Tuesday 10 May from 6.00pm.(face to face)
New Farm P&C

Reminder - Students please do not ride your bike or scooter in the school grounds before or after school.
The Active School Travel (AST) program offers Brisbane primary schools a suite of free resources, tools and incentives. The program encourages students, parents, carers and teachers to leave the car at home and actively travel to school. Since 2004, 162 schools and more than 113,000 students have participated in the Active School Travel (AST) program.
In 2019 our AST schools achieved the following results:
- 24,300 students from 45 schools engaged with the program
- almost 1 in 2 families left the car at home
- on average, 47% of students actively travelled, with some schools reporting up to 75% of their students actively travelling to school
- walking trips increased from 17% t0 31%, which equates to almost 5000 more walking trips per week from students in the first year of the program.
Active School Travel - Scootering
Riding a scooter makes the school run fun! For parents, it’s easy to walk or ride alongside a child on a scooter. Plus, it’s easy to carry the scooter home if it can’t be stored at school. Scooting is one way to actively travel to school and incorporate physical activity in the everyday life of children.
Scooter skills sessions
We want more students to ride to school and we want them to have the skills, confidence and experience to ride safely. Reminder - Students please do not ride your bike or scooter in the school grounds before or after school.
Meet Scoot
The Active School Travel character, Scoot rides his scooter to and from school with his friends every day! He wears his helmet and is always watching for cars coming in and out of driveways.
Scoot's Top Tips for travel
- Always wear a helmet and make sure it's done up.
- Check your brakes before you leave on your ride.
- Keep your speed down and watch for pedestrians.
- Be extra careful when crossing driveways.
- Ride in a group with your friends – it's fun!
- Reminder - Students please do not ride your bike or scooter in the school grounds before or after school.
