What if my student is unwell?
Any child who is showing signs of illness or feeling unwell, should stay at home.
If a child is showing signs of illness at school, the school will contact the parent or carer to collect the child.
Does School Plus automatically know we are away?
No. If you have a regular booking with School Plus Outside School Hours Care, it is your responsibility to notify them directly if you need to cancel or amend a booking, will be away or if your student is absent due to illness.
Please phone 0458 052 153 or email newfarm@schoolplus.com.au
If you fail to notify School Plus of an absence Police may be notified in accordance with the 'Missing Child Policy'.
What if my student is attending a school activity somewhere else?
If the school transports students to an activity via bus or walking groups, the school will mark a roll and account for the students.
If you transport your student to the activity, please notify the school they have arrived and are participating in the activity.

How does the Absence SMS from school work?
If your student is not present at 9am roll marking and the office has not been notified they would be away, an SMS is generated and sent to parents. You are able to reply text to this SMS.
If your child/ren have a medical condition requiring regular or emergency administration of medication, please make sure you have supplied school with the following:
- All medications must be in the original container and have clear chemist labels with the students name
- Any allergy/asthma/anaphylaxis plans must be completed and signed by a GP
- All parents must also complete a consent to administer form that aligns with the GP directed plan - there must be a form completed for each medication
IF YOUR CHILD/REN SELF ADMINISTER THEIR MEDICATION THIS NEEDS TO BE CLEARLY DISPLAYED IN BOTH THE LETTER FROM THE DOCTOR AND IN THE ACTION PLAN
Parents are also required to provide a letter detailing their consent for their child/ren to administer their own medication.
Parents are welcome to drop medication to the Admin Office between 9am – 3pm daily.
Students are not permitted to transport their own medication. An adult must attend and provide medication and complete any require consents.
For all emergency medication, once it has been received and recorded by administration, all medication (e.g. asthma medication, anaphylaxis medication) will be put into a labelled box and stored in the administration building First Aid Room.
If your child/ren’s medical status changes (e.g. asthma action plan no longer relevant, allergy severity decreased etc) please let the school know via email through firstaid@newfarmss.eq.edu.au so that we may update our systems.

School Opinion Surveys
The suite of School Opinion Surveys is undertaken each year by the Department of Education to obtain opinions about our school from families, school staff and students in target year levels (5, 6, 8 and 11).
The surveys will help identify what we are doing well, and understand where we can improve. The survey invitation will be emailed in the week beginning 21 July and is titled School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2025. Each school family will receive one email invitation from the Department of Education to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey.
The survey is anonymous, and the results are not reported in ways that an individual’s response can be identified by the school. Parents/Caregivers are encouraged to complete the survey. The survey can be completed via computers, tablets or smart phones with an internet connection. For Parents/Caregivers who do not have access to the internet school computers/tablets will be available. Parents/caregivers who experience difficulties accessing the survey can request a new survey from the School Opinion Survey team via email schoolopinionsurvey@qed.qld.gov.au.
Can’t find your invitation? If your family has more than one parent/caregiver, check that they haven’t received the invitation and/or check your junk email folder.
Our year 5 & 6 students will receive an email invitation and will be given time in class to complete the survey. This will be a voluntary anonymous activity.
Head of Department - Curriculum
Welcome to Term 3 and with it the opportunity for a number of extra-curricular activities. In Week 1, Peter Curby (Innovation Coach) and Deb Joynson (Highly Acc. Teacher) were part of teams leading Mini Festivals.
Mini Writers Festival
Dr Cameron Stelzer author of the Pie Rats, Scallywags and SOS book series, led a fantastic writing session for our young aspiring writers. There were lots of activities to encourage imaginative stories, develop skills to improve and extend writing, and share our work with our friends.
Mini-Coders Festival – Coding Creativity in Action
Selected Year 3 and 4 students have been participating in the Mini-Coders Festival, where they’ve explored the exciting world of retro game design using Microsoft MakeCode Arcade. Working in pairs, students applied Design Thinking to develop creative ideas, plan gameplay features, and troubleshoot their code. They learned how to write algorithms, code events, and program conditionals—all while collaborating through paired programming. Each student designed and coded their very own retro-style video game, proudly showcasing their creativity and problem-solving skills.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
Reading remains a continued focus and can form part of afternoon and nightly routines. Encourage your child to read and be involved in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Forms were sent home last term and are due back at the end of Week 6 – Fri 22nd Aug. If your child needs a replacement form, please see your class teacher or email Mrs Krohn. HeadOfDepartment@newfarmss.eq.edu.au
Book week – Book an Adventure – Friday 22nd August
This year’s Book Week theme is Book an Adventure. The Australian Book Council Shortlisted books have been ordered and are being shared with classes. They will then be in circulation and available for borrowing. Start thinking about characters and costumes your children may wish to dress as in the annual Book Week parade, Friday 22nd Aug. Costumes do not need to be elaborate. Sometimes, simple is the most effective!

Head of Special Education Services
While I’m in the process of familiarising myself with the school processes, I am keen to make contact with as many members of the community as possible. With families and schools working in partnership, our students will thrive academically, socially and emotionally in an inclusive and supportive environment.
In Week 3, I will be attending the Year 5 camp. This will provide me an opportunity to get to know many of our students in a very different setting.
Then, coming up in Week 4, Kahli McLeod and myself will hold our consultation meetings. This is an opportunity for parents and teachers to discuss adjustments that are required to enable students who we support to access and participate alongside their peers.
I’m looking forward to many more opportunities over the term to communicate and work with the New Farm community.

National Science Week is Coming!
Week 5 – Friday 15 August
Theme: Decoding the Universe – Exploring the Unknown with Nature’s Hidden Patterns
We’re excited to celebrate National Science Week 2025 with a fantastic lineup of activities across the school. This year’s theme, Decoding the Universe, invites students to explore the hidden structures, codes, and systems that help us understand how the world – and the wider universe – works.
Throughout the week, classes will engage in hands-on science experiences prepared by their teachers, sparking curiosity, wonder, and investigation.
Our celebrations will culminate in a whole-school Science Fair in the hall on Friday, 15 August. Thanks to the support of our amazing parent and carer community, students will visit a series of engaging stalls run by parents who are sharing their expertise, passions, and careers – from geology and environmental science to artificial intelligence, health, and technology.
Every class will have a chance to visit the Science Fair during the day, with the hall also open at second break for extra exploration. Whether it’s holding a rock core sample, experimenting with light and sound, or discovering how AI “thinks”, there’s something for every budding scientist to discover!
Book Week
Book Week is held 18th August – 23rd August this year with the theme, ‘Book an Adventure’. We will be holding our Book Week Parade in the hall on Friday 22nd August. We encourage everyone to dress up as their favourite book character and there will be a variety of activities held in the library during breaktimes to celebrate.

BAND INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC SUCCESS
After successfully auditioning on flute and receiving an offer, Josephine took part in three intensive days of concert band rehearsals as part of the Northside Honours Music Workshop. Held at Wavell State High School late in Term 2, the event involved 26 state schools from across the region.
Josephine received the honour of being principal Flutist in the concert band and was even invited to shake the conductor’s hand during the final applause!
