Curriculum and the Classroom
Swimming
As the weather heats up, it is a great opportunity to get into the pool. Swimming instruction started last week, for all students from Prep to Yr 6. When interviewing some Yr 2 students, I was informed of their activities which included various strokes and techniques including “bubble, bubble, breathe.” Hugo commented, “I’m in group 3. I love to swim breaststroke and backstroke. Swimming with my friends is fun.” Aiden mentioned how initially he felt nervous because he hasn’t done it for a while, but when I actually got in, I felt better. Freya described swimming as fun and another student exclaimed, “It was the best!”
eSafety Forum
Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the eSafety Forum with Madonna Harrett MP, Grace Grace MP and Jonty Bush MP at Kelvin Grove State College in the evening. The session was aimed at supporting families to navigate new laws coming in on 10th Dec, 2025 regarding the delay of social media platforms for children under the age of 16. Although our children at New Farm are under that age limit, it was timely to be reminded about having conversations early with our children. How we model our use of technology is also an important factor in our families, as our children see what we do. There was a positive tone about the messaging, that it is not just the time that children spend on screens that need to be considered but also the purpose and content. Presenters encouraged a community approach and acknowledged how Australians are now challenging and changing the culture to improve safety for our children.
