Dr Carmel McGrath
Thank you to all parents for continuing to support your children and for working closely with teaching staff while children are learning at home and online. I would like to acknowledge the many families who are persevering with Onenote despite the challenges of family demands, work, curriculum and technology.
Mrs Bradley and I have worked with our Year 6 leaders today to produce a video to again (1) answer some of your frequently asked questions, (2) to share our PBL focus of ‘Being Respectful in Cyberspace’ and (3) announce our students of the week. Link below will be active tomorrow .
Staffing Updates
Term 2 – To support our staff at school while some others work from home, we have some additional teachers: Scott Young and Sonia Ball. These teachers are part of our regular relief and known to our students.
Our HOD (Curriculum) Melinda Norman started with us this term and has come at a very good time, when we really need her knowledge and expertise in online learning and curriculum development. Melinda is working with staff on our Arts Curriculum this year in the background while also assisting year level teams with ensuring consistency of planning and assessment tasks.
Labour Day Holiday – School is closed to all students and staff on Monday 4 May.
Reporting Period
Staff are currently finalising student semester 1 Interim reports. These will be sent home on Friday 1 May. Specialist grades will not be included but if you wish to email the specialist teachers directly, they can provide you with your child’s marks.
2021 Prep Enrolments
We began taking our 2021 Prep Enrolments at the beginning of Term 2 and interviews will be held once we are back into our regular school routines. It is essential that applicants have proof of age (birth certificate or passport) and evidence of primary residency in our catchment. Please refer to our website and look under the Enrolment Tab to find the checklist to ensure you have all the relevant documentation required to proceed your child’s application.

- What does school look like for students who are attending?
Students of essential workers, who are coming to school, are grouped in year level groups. They are supervised by different teachers and teacher aides and engage in the same learning activities as students at home.
- Can teachers use PDFs to send work home?
Whilst we understand the issues parents are facing we are also hearing that more and more parents are having success with OneNote. To convert OneNote work to PDF, does require reformatting and whilst we can send PDFs to parents for the time being, we will be persevering with OneNote. Mr Fenton will be focussing on helping teachers and parents from year levels still having problems with OneNote.
- I’m finding ‘learning at home’ difficult, can I send my child back to school?
We as teachers like you as parents are really looking forward to our school returning to normal. In the meantime, we have to ‘stay to course’ in following Education Queensland’s guidelines. If you are at home, or have other caregivers available, your child/children should be at home.
Be flexible and kind to yourself. If you are trying to work at home, do not feel that all learning tasks need to be completed each day. Discuss with your class teacher what tasks take priority.
- There seems to be lots of different messages in the media, from different sources, who should we listen to?
The avalanche of directions from different sources are overwhelming at times. We at school, are in daily contact with Education Queensland and are following all directions given. We will pass these onto you as soon as is possible.
- Will my child be behind in their learning?
Obviously all students around the world are being impacted by current events. Our students at school and at home are still learning and when we return to school we will continue with our school curriculum and make the necessary adjustments so that achievement standards are still met.
- What are teachers doing at school, this week?
Our teachers have risen to the challenge of changing their entire way of working, in a very short time frame. This week, teachers continue preparing and resourcing future lessons, give feedback to students, support parents through emails and phone calls, re-format work into PDFs, forward planning with our Head of Curriculum and compile Interim reports.

New Farm State School are very excited to announce a partnership with The School Locker who will supply and manage our school uniform from Monday 4 May, 2020.
What will this mean to you:
⏺ The on-site uniform shop will open each Wednesday morning 8am-9.30am (when government restrictions are lifted)and managed by your regular Uniform Shop convenor Annalisa Toole. Until the COVID-19 restrictions around online learning are lifted The School Locker offer a full online service which will be live from May 4, 2020.
⏺ During the transition, The School Locker will be working with previous and future suppliers to manage the shortage of any sizes across our Uniform Range moving forward and will work with any and all customers to make sure all students are outfitted according to the unchanging uniform range of the school.
⏺ The uniform pricing will not change from the current pricing and the administration team will work closely with The School Locker to ensure communication around the Uniform is done through the normal channels of the school.
The P&C Committee and School Administration team are very excited with this move to give parents more access to the purchase of our school uniform with a 24 hour shop online website which allows for affordable delivery to home or pick up from school office. The School Locker offers more than just uniforms with offerings in school footwear, stationery, musical instruments and accessories, sporting goods and great discounts on technology and accessories. This is all available in a number of Superstores in South East Queensland including North Lakes, Oxley and Loganholme as well as www.theschoollocker.com.au .
Another wonderful initiative is that by shopping at The School Locker you will raise funds for our school community by buying items you would be purchasing anyway.
