National Reconciliation Week 27 May – 3 June
The National reconciliation week 2023 theme “Be A Voice for Generations” is a challenge for all individuals, families, communities, organisations and government – to be brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so that we can make change for the benefit of all Australians. … National reconciliation week is a time for all Australians to learn about shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
Thank you to Ms Andrews for organising Troy from Wadjiny to present and perform at this week’s incursion Thursday 25 May. The incursion will be an informative interactive cultural experience. Further learning about reconciliation will happen across the coming week in classroom and at next week’s assembly, thanks to Ms Andrew’s development of culturally and age appropriate materials for staff.
National Sorry Day is Friday 26 May; a day which acknowledges and raises awareness of the history and continued effect of the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from their families, communities and culture. National Reconciliation Week celebrates and builds on the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians.
These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.
27 May 1967 On this day, Australia’s most successful referendum saw more than 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Australian Government power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and recognise them in the Census.
3 June 1992 On this day, the Australian High Court delivered the Mabo decision, the culmination of Eddie Koiki Mabo’s challenge to the legal fiction of ‘terra nullius’ (land belonging to no one) and leading to the legal recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of lands. This decision paved the way for Native Title.
Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Teneriffe Festival
This Saturday 27 May many of our students and staff will be supporting our local Teneriffe Festival with a number of performances planned. This is a wonderful local event and I hope families are able to attend and enjoy this event which directly supports local business and community.
P&C Meeting Thursday 25 May 6pm in the school hall – all welcome.
PBL – Be Responsible
All students should be in the correct area before and after school.
At 8.30 a.m. students are supervised on the netball court, the oval and in front of reception. Preps are permitted in Little Play, with parental supervision. Adventure Playgrounds, Little Farm and around E block are all out of bounds.
After school, students should make their way to Schools Plus, home or the Pick-Up Zone. All other areas are out of bounds.
Daily Writing
A huge thank you to Mel Beikoff, Louis’s Mum, for setting up our week 5, whole school writing stimulus. I’ve attached two pieces of student writing: Zumchung - Yr3 and Sylvia - Prep
The children have really enjoyed visiting this great 3D display, and then writing about it in class. If you are feeling creative and would like to set up term 3’s week 5 display, please contact me at kbrad27@eq.edu.au
Uniform Reminders
Just a reminder that any earrings worn to school, should be small studs or hoops. More elaborate earrings should be for evenings and weekends.
Although other Jumpers can be worn on the way to school, students should only be wearing uniform ones when at school.
Any watch capable of taking photographs and or communication needs to handed into the office, with student phones. This applies, even if a device is set in school mode.
Thank you to the New Farm SS community for such a warm welcome as I settle back into the role of Acting Head of Department (Curriculum). It has been a pleasure connecting in with parents, staff and students again. There has been many familiar faces from several years ago when I was previously in this role, and it is wonderful to see so many new faces around the school grounds as NFSS continues to grow. I certainly feel the New Farm community spirit all around and if you see me in the playground, please feel free to chat and say, “Hello”. I love to hear about your feelings about our wonderful curriculum and how students are experiencing their learning at such a lovely school.

Wadjiny Whole School Incursion - Thursday 25 May 2023
New Farm State School is pleased to be welcoming Wadjiny, an incursion for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures. This curriculum aligned incursion will provide all New Farm State School students with a lasting insight into Aboriginal histories and cultures.
Troy Allen combines dance, storytelling, and music to explore the culture and day to day life in a hunter gatherer society. This immersive presentation allowed students to be involved in traditional dance.
The students will be engaged and educated through the presentation of a collection of artefacts including traditional weapons, tools, nets and other everyday items.
A constant throughout all his stories is a theme of great respect for land and all creatures that inhabit it.
