Achieving and Growing
Over this fortnight teachers will meet with their year level coaches and the Curriculum Coordinator to review student reading results and analyse the relative ‘growth and achievement’ comparative to Students’ 2018 Semester 2 results. Year level teams meet to discuss student progress and areas of need. Following the data discussions, teachers plan their next term’s curriculum with adjustments for particular student needs. For reading improvement, teachers will make adjustments to their reading strategies and student learning goals. In every classroom students are learning through a balanced reading program which incorporates the elements of: guided, shared, modelled and independent reading.
Guided reading is a teacher-directed activity involving small groups of students working with individual copies of the same text. Teachers can focus on an identified need of the students in the group, such as comprehension skills.
Shared reading is a teacher-led activity that can be conducted with the whole class or a small group. Through shared reading teachers can encourage enjoyment of text and support students in successfully accessing a range of text types.
Modelled reading involves a clear demonstration of reading behaviours or strategies accompanied by teacher verbalization (think-aloud statements) of the thinking processes used in reading.
Independent reading involves students selecting and independently engaging with texts without interruption. Independent reading provides an opportunity for students to appreciate a text and apply the reading strategies they are learning. In addition to this, students may use independent reading time to research assignments and tasks or to deepen their understanding of a learning area topic.
Cross Country
Students from P-6 will participate in our annual Cross Country this Wednesday. Parents are very welcome to attend and support the students in their events. Thank you to Mr Rainbow, staff and volunteers for helping prepare and organise the day.
After School Activities
Thank you to parents and students for being so cooperative with our afternoon process. Once the 3:20pm bell sounds or the teacher’s whistle is blown, it signals it is time to head home.
Parents and students, who are remaining or returning to the school for CEP or Swimming activities, are reminded to stay with or near that activity and not join in with our Jabiru group. This allows the Jabiru staff to concentrate on the supervision of the children in their care.
Students are reminded to be cautious when riding scooters or bikes to and from school, paying attention to traffic particularly when crossing driveways and roads.
- Uniform Reminders
As we will hopefully be moving into some cooler weather soon, I’d like to remind parents about uniform requirements.
As part of our uniform, school jumpers are permitted along with blue or maroon track pants or leggings. Please keep non-uniform jumpers and leggings for weekends and evenings.
In addition, a reminder that, shoes for school, should be mostly black
From the Student Support Services Team

Maria Offermans is our visiting Department of Education speech-language pathologist (SLP). Maria works collaboratively with the educational team to identify and support students who experience learning barriers because of their special needs in communication. This support can take many different forms and may target one or more of the following areas:
- Oral Language: Understanding directions, questions and different types of word and sentence structures; expressing information, knowing the words for things (vocabulary), and asking questions.
- Speech: Being able to say sounds correctly.
- Phonological Awareness: Being able to identify, segment, blend and manipulate sounds.
- Pragmatics (Language Use): Using language appropriately to be able to relate to peers and teachers.
- Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC): For students requiring high and low tech communication aides, such as key word signing or voice output applications.
- Eating and Drinking: For students who have difficulties with oral motor control required to eat and drink safely.
Maria works at our school every 2nd Friday.
End of Term Direction Meetings
During the term, teachers gather data about their students, continuously monitor their progress and work collaboratively with their year level colleagues and coaches to develop specific strategies to support all students. Year Level Direction meetings are held at the end of every term. This is a time for teachers to review their students’ reading data and create their curriculum plan for the following term.
At the end of last week and the beginning of this week, teachers across each year level have been released to hold a Data Talk with Carmel, our Principal, Sandy Chambers, our Support Teacher: Literacy & Numeracy and their year level coach to review their students’ reading progress. Trends are identified within and across the year levels and effective intervention strategies discussed and actioned. Following these Data Talks, teachers have worked with Rachael Siebuhr, our Curriculum Coordinator, to plan quality curriculum Term 2 programs.
In the first two weeks of next term, teachers again will be released as a year level to further discuss and collaboratively plan the differentiated teaching and learning opportunities to cater for all students.
Demountable building Project - From this week we will have Fleetwood contractors on site to begin works on the prefabricated building coming to the school.

- The shade structure outside Jabiru will be removed as part of the works to allow for a lift and stairwell to be erected for the building.
- They will bring the building on site via a crane during the holidays.
- Jabiru will be in contact with Fleetwood to assure students safety during this time.
- Contractors from Fleetwood will be here at school for the next 9-10 weeks for this project.
- If you are accessing the Pool for swimming lessons we ask that you do not wander in the school grounds whilst the works take place.

- The new stair access to the oval will be constructed in this period as well.
- Again if you are accessing the school for swimming lessons we ask that you do not wander in the school grounds.
- The oval playground and hall playground will receive some landscaping as well during the holidays.
A Block and B Block - Walls to be erected
The Heritage walls in A Block and B block will be renovated to have a false wall placed over the top to make the classrooms a more functional space for display and white boards are to be erected for classes. These works will take place during the holiday period.
Learnscape Hall Garden Group Project
James from Sun and Soil Organic Landscapes will be on site to complete the Hall garden areas. There may be some deliveries coming to site. Jabiru will be made aware of any deliveries to ensure students are safe from vehicle movements.
Jabiru Sign in procedure
Following the success of our Juniors signing in at the Hall, this week our Year 2-6 children will begin signing in at our new location near the Memorial Area and using this space for their afternoon tea. This week’s PBL focus is in the area of Be Responsible during pick-up and drop-off times. At Jabiru, it’s very important that children go straight to the pick-up zone, or Jabiru sign-in area before the 2nd bell. When parents don’t let us know that their children will be absent from Jabiru, we search the school grounds, and visit the office at that 2nd bell to determine whether children are away or are unaccounted for. It is very important that by the 2nd bell, children and families have vacated the school grounds, to allow for us to cater to the safety and wellbeing of our enrolled children.
In the coming weeks our Seniors will begin signing in at our new location near the Memorial Area, and using this space for their afternoon tea. This will be the new routine in the wake of the exciting new building that will be arriving on the grass area in the coming weeks. Watch this space for more information.
Our holiday program is now available – we are hosting a huge array of exciting activities including a Harry Potter masterclass, thunder egg fossicking at Mt Tamborine, and a special Seniors excursion to Mooloolabba. Don’t miss out, spaces are limited. Book now to secure your spot – it’s cheaper than you think!
Items for NFSS Fete - Dino Dig Donations
Dinosaur Dig themed items: Do you happen to have a child who may have outgrown their dinosaur obsession or have some other items to assist us with our fete preparation?
We are collecting all dinosaur related items to turn our lower Prep area into a Dinosaur Dig and Kids Zone on fete day so if you have any quality items over the coming months which you were planning to donate to charity and would like to donate to the school fete for our dinosaur dig to theme our stall we would be very appreciative. These items include:
- dinosaurs including dinosaur skeletons (any size – plastic only not plush/material please),
- safety goggles/glasses,
- egg cartons (for safe storage of our prepared dino eggs ready for the fete),
- Under 5yo small lab coats and a few adult size lab coats,
- plastic safari hats (kids sizes).
Donation point: from 1 April we will have two labelled donation boxes to place items for us to collect and then store offsite ready for our fete.
Prep L is located on the top level, new building, corner classroom closest to Hawthorne street. Donation boxes will be placed on the lower baggage rack in front of the classroom, labelled “DINO DIG DONATIONS”.
Due to the day having many volunteers and lots of children we do not want to be provided with anything that needs to be returned in fear that precious items may go missing, so please only provide items that after the fete we would either keep for the next fete or pass onto a charity.
Prep L thanks you all for your support!
The Year 6 Community and Charity Project Group

Well done to the Community and Charity Project captains and members.

NUDOJO is a Company specialized in Youth Athletic Development.
Workshop focuses are:
- Growing motor abilities and confidence to either join organized sports when they reach High School time or keep up with exercise for life
- Nurturing our kids, in a safe and exciting environment of structured Physical Activities, in which they feel relaxed to make mistakes, learn and grow.
- Long Term Athletic development, developing kids' physical foundations and intrinsic motivations for participation. We do not push for Excellence or Competitions at this early stage: Science proved that it is psychologically detrimental for long term participation and physically inadequate for injury prevention.
These programs are age group based and take into account individual growth and maturation, inorder to ensure maximal adherence and safety.
We test our kids to see trends and changes in their Strength, Speed, Agility, Balance, Height.
NUDOJO programs are run in 3 schools (The Gap State School, Holy Spirit New Farm, Rainworth Public School) with over 100 students enrolled, plus we run Sports/Fitness Camps during the holidays both independently or with the Schools' Vacation Care providers (YMCA and CENTACARE)
