IMPORTANT NOTICES
What if my child is unwell?
Any child who is showing signs of illness or feeling unwell, must stay at home.
If a child is showing signs of illness at school, the school will contact the parent or carer to collect the child.
Teneriffe Festival was a wonderful way for our community to get together, post Covid. It was very exciting that New Farm School was able to take part and so many children had an opportunity to perform. A special thank you to Ms Loudon who worked hard to make this happen.
Social Emotional Learning at New Farm
The Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) defines Social Emotional Learning (SEL) as “an integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships and make responsible and caring decisions”
SEL is linked to the Personal and Social Capabilities aspect of the Australian Curriculum and this year we have begun trialling the Research based Second Step program in every class in the school.
A Meta-analysis of 213 school-based SEL programs has demonstrated many benefits, including improved social and emotional skills, attitudes, behaviour and in academic performance.
Have a look at the Second Step® Elementary Digital Program found in this link. You can find more information and review a few of the lessons https://www.secondstep.org/families
Contact your class teacher if you have any specific questions about Second Step, in your child’s classroom.
Active School Travel
How easy is it for you to walk, ride or catch public transport to school? It just became a whole lot easier to plan with our new Active Travel map.
Brisbane City Council has created our own customised map as part of our Active School Travel program. The map which your child has brought home from school makes it simple for you to find your best walking, riding or public transport route to school. It highlights local walking and riding paths, crossings, bus stops, parks and playgrounds, and other local points of interest.
The map features suggested active travel routes (pink) where you can park outside the 6-8-minute walk radius from the school gate and walk or ride the final part of your journey. Part way is okay! With a magnet on the back, the map can be kept prominently on your fridge as a reminder of your active travel options.
Keeping Healthy
If your child/children are unwell we urge you to keep them at home. When children attend school sick, we risk the quick spread of illness which impacts students and staff alike. If your child is ill at school, we will call you to take him/her home.
TENERIFFE FESTIVAL
What a wonderful community event we were able to participate in. It was an honour to be involved, and a joy to see our students perform. I also had some valuable conversations with members of the public about the great initiatives and work of our school. I’d like to extend a special thanks to the following people, as it ‘takes a village’-
- Peter Curby- for helping transport our props and stall equipment
- Peter Nash- for leading the Year 1 ‘Bear Hunt drama’ and designing the props
- Lesley Burridge- for helping with the ‘Bear Hunt drama’ and rehearsals
- Rebekah Davis- for leading the Prep ‘Gruffalo’ performance
- Keryn Heenan- for leading the Year 1-2 ‘We Are One’ performance
- Amalina from Creative Dance Industries- for leading the Year 3-6 Dance performance
- Sara Sheather- for helping set up the stall
- Anna Gardner- for helping supervise the stall
- Annabel DeBoer- for helping supervise the stall
- David Borg- for helping supervise the stall
- Marg Smith- for helping supervise the stall
- Laura Watson- for helping supervise the stall
- Cathy Van der Griend- for helping supervise the stall
- Kay Bradley- for helping supervise the stall and pack up
- Dane O’Hara- for helping pack up
- Peter McAllister- for helping pack up and returning the trailer to school
- Carmel McGrath- for helping supervise the stall and promote our school with the festival organisers, local and state MPs

Students Health and Action plans
Health and Action Plans
Schools can assist students with health support needs such as diabetes, epilepsy, asthma and anaphylaxis. However, it is important to ensure they have an up-to-date copy of your child’s health/action plans. Speak to the school about how they can support your child. If needed, the school can access the State Schools Nursing Service for support to make sure your child is safe at school.
