Squid Game
Last year, Mr Fenton organised a parent session with cyber safety expert Brett Lee. One of his recommendations was the website Common Sense Media (https://www.commonsensemedia.org/) which gives up to date information on how appropriate various media is for children.
After seeing a number of students, including year 1 and 2 students, playing ‘Squid Game’ I have used this resource to review this Netflix show. ‘Squid Game’ is trending at the moment and has a high level of violence where characters are systematically tortured and killed for the pleasure of a game master. It has themes of gambling, sex and threats of sexual violence. This show is rated by Common Sense Media as +16 years.
I would urge parents to be mindful of the content of this show and how appropriate the themes are for young children.

Kindy Visit
On Tuesday 12th October we had a visit from the Kindergarten Educator Little Ducks Fortitude Valley, Souter. This is part of the work of our Early Years Network. Souter enjoyed visiting classes to see how we do transitions, Read Write Inc, writing, Dance, eating and play. She was amazed to see the growth of students she remembers from Kindergarten. During week 9, the Prep Teachers will be visiting Little Ducks to observe the Kindergarten program and consider further strategies for our transition to Prep supports. This Early Years Network is also organising a free parent session on Mental Health and Wellbeing, presented by our own Guidance Officer Jo Minto, on Thursday 28th October. See the flier attached to this newsletter for further information.
2022 Prep Open Morning
On Thursday 14th October we held our Prep Open Play Morning. It was attended by approximately 70 children. Our future Prep students had the opportunity to do construction, draw, cut and paste, play, meet our Prep staff and make some new friends. Our future Prep parents had the opportunity to meet each other, find out some information about Jabiru, and have an hour to themselves. Welcome to our wonderful school community new students and parents!

Safe and Respectful School Communities
Your child, our student. One team.
We all deserve respectful, safe and non-violent environments, so aggression and harassment of any kind—physical, verbal or otherwise—isn't acceptable.
When you interact with school staff, remember we're all on the same team to support your child. We all have your child's best interests at heart, and the best way to achieve a positive learning experience is to work together.
Safe and respectful school communities campaign
The department launched the Safe and respectful school communities campaign with videos and resources to highlight occupational violence in schools and encourage positive communication and collaboration between parents, carers and schools.
Schools are not only learning places, but workplaces where school staff have the right to feel safe and respected. This campaign outlines the importance of safe and respectful partnerships between parents, carers and school staff.
It’s important to remember we’re all on the same team and by working together, we can all contribute to positive student outcomes.
The Safe and respectful school communities campaign commenced in 2021 and is aimed at Queensland parents and carers of primary and secondary school aged children.
