News from Year 4

The Year 4 teachers have been busy implementing the newly adopted whole-school approach to Daily Proof Reading (DPR).

WHY DPR?

The purpose of Daily Proof Reading (DPR) is, through an instructional routine, to …

  • Reinforce skills in proofreading:
  • Enhance writing at sentence level via targeted editing processes.

DPR is the practice of proofreading and editing. At the sentence level, teachers make deliberate choices regarding errors to include in the sentence. Teachers usually provide an exemplary sentence for students to proofread and correct. (Usually only one sentence is used). Whilst students are working, teachers will provide feedback regarding performance.

The DPR routine follows a simple set of steps:

  1. Communicate intent and success.
  2. Read sentence together with students.
  3. Scaffold the teaching of errors to enable student success.
  4. Rewrite the sentence.
  5. Allow students to re-write sentence making corrections.
  6. Provide purposeful feedback to students each lesson, targeting individual and ongoing needs, noting further teaching that is required.

The Year 4 teachers are very excited to see how this new whole-school approach of DPR will enhance the quality of the children’s writing.
