From Head of Curriculum
Australian Girls Choir (AGC)
Over the coming weeks we are excited to have the Australian Girls Choir (AGC) visit NFSS to complete a workshop with interested participants. Look out for the information flyers which will have a permission slip attached for all girls prep – year 6. Please return your permission slip to the school if you are interested in having your daughter participate. On the day, interested girls will participate in a 30 minute workshop with one of AGC’s experienced tutors, involving simple rhythm, pitch and movement activities and games. Following the workshop, AGC will send an encouraging personalised written report to the parents of each girl who participated.
The AGC provides wonderful performance opportunities to many thousands of girls from across the country and was established in 1984 in Melbourne by Judith Curphey OAM. The founding philosophy behind the AGC is that every child can learn to sing given encouragement and training is designed to cater to varying abilities and confidence levels. Girls have fun, make friends and blossom musically and socially as members of the choir. Our school is helping to engage girls and give them the opportunity to experience what the AGC has to offer.

Back to School Reading Tips
With a new term underway it’s time to get in the swing of school learning.
Here are some easy ways that parents and carers can help children become strong, successful readers:
- Set a routine.
Routines have many benefits, namely, children feel comfortable and stable in their environment, resulting in more cooperative behavior inside and outside of school. - Read at home.
Reading regularly at home provides children with the practice they need to become great readers. Remember, “The more kids read, the better they read,” and the same holds true for the opposite effect, “the less kids read, the poorer they’ll read.” - Make a special reading spot.
Designating a special reading spot for children to read with their parents or carer is not only fun, but is also a great way to create a distraction-free zone where children can concentrate. - Be a great reading partner!
It’s no fun to read when you’re forced to or feel embarrassed and ashamed to read. Building trust and supporting a child reader is crucial as a reading partner. - Set a good example; be caught in the act!
Children mimic the behavior they see at home, repeating the actions they observe from their parents or carers can instill great reading practices.
Matthew N (4W) & James M (4/5F) love to read!
Lets get ready to move!
Moi B, Elke H and Yanna S from 4/5F are getting ready to move this term playing handball at lunchtime. As we progress into term 4 all this physical play will help them to practice the four elements of dance (Dynamics, Relationships, Space & Time) during our dance program set to begin next week with Creative Dance Industries. All year levels will be learning to choreograph their own dance moves as they move their way into some fun dance moves!
