Year 6 Leadership
Camp
This year our Year 6 staff and student are away on their Moreton Island outdoor education camp. Following last year’s disappointing cancellation of our annual Yr 6 Canberra trip, the P&C approved our change to the Qld based venue for this year. I have had some photos and daily updates from staff and by all accounts are finding the camp an excellent venue and experience for the students. For many of our students this is their first time away from family as the year 5 camp in 2020 was also cancelled. The students are enjoying the range of activities and the weather, thankfully, has been wonderful for their time on Moreton Island. I am sure a full spread of photos and accounts of the trip will be presented on assembly and newsletter on their return.
Badge Ceremony
On Tuesday 16 March we are holding our annual student leadership induction ceremony. The audience will include Year 6 parents and Year 4 & 5 classes only. For our Year 6 students this is a very important occasion where they pledge their commitment to uphold the school expectations of being respectful, responsible, safe and learners as they take on the role of leaders within our school. All students have participated in a range of leadership and team building activities throughout this term.
Year Level Leaders
This week our Year Level Leaders (Mr Nash, Ms Smith, Mr Ramos, Ms Turner, Ms Norman, Mr Conde, Ms Blackadder and Ms Baker) are attending a professional development conference on Leadership and team capacity building. In the last week of school they will also be working with Education Consultant David Curran on ‘strengths based team work’.
Year 5 & 6 Permissions
This week we have sent home 2 specific media consent forms for Year 5 & 6 students requested for our special assembly for National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence on the Friday 19th March. Please complete these and send them back as soon as possible.
Workplace Health and Safety
This week we held our term LOCKDOWN drill practice. Thank you to classroom teachers and students for doing such a great job following procedures so efficiently.
P&C AGM update
With many thanks to those parents who responded to the P&C call out last week - they have now received nominations for the Treasurer and Secretary positions. If you would like to be involved, nominations remain open for all executive positions (and general members) until the AGM, rescheduled for Tuesday 30 March, from 6pm. Nominations from any Dads or male caregivers are particularly welcome.

RWI HOME READING TIMETABLE
The following table outlines when students in Yr 1, Yr 2, Yr 3 and Yr 4 receive their RWI home reading books and when they need to return them back to school. Please ensure the books are returned each week on the correct day to ensure we have enough variety of books for all of our young readers.

Innovators of Tomorrow – Preparing your child for the future
Your children and mine are digital natives. Digital natives are people who are brought up during the age of digital technology and therefore familiar with computers and the internet from an early age. Digital Technology has impacts for their life, including how they want to be taught.
How do digital natives learn differently?
- They learn by doing
- They have information at their fingertips and know they can find answers for themselves
- They ask questions like “why” and “is that the only way to do it?”
Digital natives learn by exploring, collaborating, creating and approaching problems in new ways. To cater for our digital natives, we have launched our Innovators of Tomorrow program for students in Years 1 to 6.
The program runs at first break on Monday and Tuesday. Students will have opportunities to create with Spike Lego and Lego WeDo kits, code in Scratch and Scratch Jr, develop games, program BeeBots, Bluebots, Ozobots, Edison robots, design models and print them with our 3D printers, use Osmos, learn about Augmented Reality, participate in STEM competitions and much more!
Cybersafety
To help keep your child safe when they are online, you can:
- put iPads and other devices in open spaces within your home
- remind your child that content can be posted instantaneously, the downfall is that they can potentially post something without thinking about the ramifications.
- educate your child about appropriate online behaviour and the need for respectful communication with other internet users
- keep an eye on what your child is doing online (both in the home and on any mobile devices they may have access to e.g. phones, music devices and tablets)
- set clear rules about what sites and activities they are allowed to access
- install software to limit their use and monitor/restrict the sites they visit
- discuss a plan with your child about how to address any cybersafety issues that may arise (make sure they know you will be supportive if they mention anything and that they will not get in trouble)
- encourage them to find someone they feel safe talking to, such as yourself, a relative, a teacher or a trusted adult.
If you are worried about your child’s safety online don’t be afraid to ask for help. If the issue is related to school, please speak with your child’s teacher or Mr Fenton. The link below is to the eSafety commission – They have a fantastic collection of resources for parents.
