- What Went Well?
As you collect your child/children from school or are chatting, later in the evening ask the question “What went well today? If this question becomes part of everyday reflection, research has shown that children and adults begin to first notice and then look for the positives. This is not to say you shouldn’t discuss problems, but noticing the things that have gone well, will have a positive impact on mental models and on learning.
- Bullying
This week, teachers will be discussing, in an age appropriate way, the definition of bullying that is used at New Farm. This is the agreed national definition for all Australian schools and describes bullying as:
- ongoing and deliberate misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that intends to cause physical, social and/or psychological harm;
- involving an individual or a group misusing their power, or perceived power, over one or more persons who feel unable to stop it from happening;
- happening in person or online, via various digital platforms and devices and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert).
Bullying behaviour is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time (for example, through sharing of digital records); having immediate, medium and long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders.
Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying. Behaviours that do not constitute bullying include:
- mutual arguments and disagreements (where there is no power imbalance)
- not liking someone or a single act of social rejection,
- one-off acts of meanness or spite isolated incidents of aggression, intimidation or violence.
Students are reminded to report acts of bullying immediately to their teacher, including online activity that occurs outside of school. If such behaviour has impacted the good order of the school, we can and will intervene. It is also our recommendation that if you are concerned with behaviour that constitutes bullying you do not approach other parents, but contact the school.
- Parent Teacher Interviews
Telephone interviews are available between now and the end of term. If you would like a telephone interview with your child’s class teacher contact them directly, by email. Due to the limited number of lines available, teachers will allocate you a specific time and date and will make the outgoing calls to parents.

A reminder to use the link on the Schoolzine message sent last week if you want information considered for 2021. Parent input is welcomed, but is not essential.

THANK YOU TO OUR TEACHER AIDES
This week is Australian Teacher Aide Appreciation week. At New Farm we are particularly fortunate to have such a dedicated, skilled and unified Teacher Aide team. As a special THANK YOU for their hard work and contribution to our school, we sent our lovely teacher aides off for a surprise lunch today.
We wish all our teacher aides a terrific week and want you to know you are valued and appreciated by us.
The Scholastic Book Fair is opening this Thursday!
3 September to 10 September - in the library
BOOK FAIR WILL BE DIFFERENT THIS YEAR
Only students will be able to visit the Book Fair due to COVID restrictions.
Parents will be able to view all books and merchandise on sale and make purchases online.

What’s for sale?
Books, stationery and posters. An email with photographs of all books, stationery items and posters with price tags will be sent home on Thursday 3 September to peruse the items for sale.
When can students go?
All students will visit the Book Fair with their class on Thursday this week. They will peruse the books and items for sale and create a Wish List.
The Book Fair will be open for purchasing at the following times on Monday morning through to Thursday morning during Week 9:
- Before school each day for all year levels at 8:15 – 8:45am
- Lower school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 11:15-11:40am
- Upper school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 12:50 – 1:10pm
- After school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:00 - 3:30pm
Thursday morning before school will be the last time to purchase as the Book Fair will be packed up and collected at 1pm Thursday 10 September.
How can we buy books and other items for sale?
Students can purchase from the Book Fair using cash.
Parents can make a payment online at https://parentpayments.scholastic.com.au/BookFairs.
For online payments:
- Make your payment online. Note: this is a total payment of all items purchased.
- Write the receipt number on the back of the wish list and highlight the items purchased.
- Send the wish list with the receipt number to school with your child. They will collect their items from the book fair.
The school gets a commission from every purchase – we can’t wait to purchase more books for our library with these funds!
Can we donate a book to the library?
If you would like to kindly donate a book to the library you can:
- Select a book from the book fair for our library.
- Make your payment online.
- Send the receipt number back to school with your child highlighting it is a donation.
- A donation tag with your name will be placed in the front cover of the book.
- Thank you!!
Raffle!
We will be running a raffle throughout the Book Fair. Every purchase made before 9am Thursday 10 September will receive an entry into the raffle. Book vouchers to spend at the Book Fair will be the prizes! The winners will be drawn on Thursday 10 September after the last sale at 9:00am.

Orders for Scholastic Book Club Issue 6 should be placed by Friday 4 September. You can Order here.
This catalogue has a focus on kindness, respect and helping others. You will also find many books for $3 each!
ASA- Annual Safety Assessment-We are completing this by reviewing each area of the school to produce a plan to work from for next year. This is reviewed by our regional office and produces a document we work from in regards to addressing any projects and compliance requirements.
End of Term procedures- Please check the lost property and ensure all students clothing, lunchboxes, water bottles are taken home. Cleaners and ground staff will be on site during the holiday for the full school clean.
Cleaning staff on site– both weeks, Week 1 of holiday for Jabiru cleaning and Week 2 for NFSS full school clean.
School officer onsite in Week 2 - Monday 28 September – 2 October in the holidays for general maintenance.

School Watch
The School Watch Program is a partnership between Education Queensland, the Queensland Police Service and the State Government Protective Security Service. It aims to reduce criminal activity in Queensland schools and encourages everyone to look out for after-hours crime in our schools. If you see anything suspicious, please don’t attempt to intervene.

Year 3, Worm Tea and Recycling
Year three students have been exploring what it means to recycle materials. That is, capturing materials that would otherwise go to waste in order to save natural resources. After collecting worm tea in plastic bottles, some of our year 3 students used the excess bottles to create some amazing decorative hanging plant pots.
What Is Worm Tea?
Worm tea is a natural liquid fertilizer made from soaking worm castings (worm manure) in water. In a healthy compost bin, worms help decompose food scraps by eating them. As the worms digest the organic material, they produce castings filled with nutrients and beneficial microbes. Worm tea will repopulate the soil with microbes, enrich the roots and break down the thatch turning it into food for grass. During hot summer days, worm tea can help retain water in soil.

As many of you know, our children are growing up in a world where it is increasingly important to help your child to safely navigate their digital world and educate them to avoid harmful online experiences
Your support and guidance can give your children the confidence to make sound decisions online ― and ask for help when they need it.

Keep the computer or device in an area of your home that can be supervised. And check in regularly with your child to see what they are viewing.
Stay engaged with their online activity. If they agree, consider setting up your own accounts with the sites they use most so you can see how they work and understand the risks.
Explore the online world with them to help establish that this is not just a solitary activity. Play games with them. Do a creative project together.
Think about social media readiness. Most social media sites require users to be at least 13 years of age before they can register, although some sites are created especially for children under 13. See are they old enough?
Encourage respect and empathy. Teach them to avoid sharing or posting things that may upset others. See good habits start young.
Start building resilience. Teach your child that there are ways they can deal with material that worries or frightens them. This includes immediately telling you or another trusted adult of any concerns or uncomfortable material. See good habits start young.
Encourage them to learn about online safety by exploring the kids section of this site.
Review your rules as your child grows older
Be clear about how much time they can spend online, the apps they can use, the websites they can visit and what they can share or post online.
Refer to our advice about time online and online gaming if these are of concern.
Technology tips for parents of kids 5 to 12
Ensure your own devices are protected by a password or pin, so your child cannot accidentally come across inappropriate content.
If you are thinking about giving them their own tablet or smartphone, check out are they old enough?
Use parental control tools appropriate for the age and experience of your child. Be upfront about this and get your child on board. Let them know that these can be reviewed and changed as they get older and they continue to demonstrate responsible behaviour. Consider installing a ‘child-friendly’ search engine that will allow them to explore a limited number of sites. See taming the technology.

NFSS P&C is excited to present the student Obstathon
Thursday, September 17, 2020
This is a fun physical challenge for all NFSS students and an opportunity to raise some money to support the school!
When: Thursday 17 September
Where: NFSS oval
What: Each class has 40 minutes to complete as many laps of an obstacle course as they choose. Obstacles will include Monkey Bars – Balance Beam – Inflatable Course – Tyre Run – Net Crawl – Rings and more!
(Watch out for the BONUS obstacle! Can you do it without touching the ground?)
Who: Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, this event is for students only. Sorry, but parents won’t be able to watch this time.
What to wear: House coloured shirt, remember your hat and sunscreen.
Why: The aim of the event is to raise $6,000 to support the new Arts curriculum for our students at NFSS. We value the importance of the arts in our school every day. We believe a rich arts program contributes to all aspects of a child’s development, including their physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and creative selves. It provides a safe place for children to learn about and express their feelings and moods; understand the feelings of others; and practise social skills and collaboration. Through the arts children can express their thoughts, ideas, and opinions. It gives them a way to communicate which builds confidence and fosters a sense of self - of who they are - and wellbeing.
Sponsorship: Students are sponsored by donations of a fixed amount for participating in the Obstathon. Each child will receive a form to record their sponsors and donations collected. Please return the sponsorship form with the sponsorship money to the P&C volunteers under A block before school 8:30am to 9am from Monday, 14 September through to Thursday, 17 September.
Prizes:
- Students win a point for their House each time a lap of the obstacle course is completed. You may win extra points for your House or special Kookie stamps for excellent teamwork, showing support for friends and generally demonstrating school values. There will be a House colour free dress day for the highest points awarded on the day.
- The class that raises the most money receives a pizza lunch.
- The House that raises the most money receives a disco in the Hall at lunch time.
Sponsorship forms can be downloaded above, and hard copies will be handed out in class tomorrow.
Signed permission forms are to be returned to the class teacher by Friday 11/9/20.
