Pick-up and Drop off Arrangements
In light of the evolving COVID 19 situation, we will once again be restricting the number of adults on school grounds. Dismissal arrangements are designed to release our students in waves to ensure adults are not on the grounds or at the gates, in large numbers. We thank you for your continued flexibility and cooperation.
Please note that the pick-up zone on Heal Street will not begin until the bell has rung at 3 p.m., when yr 1-6 students make their way to the pick-up point.
8.30 a.m.
- Prep train will take students from the Heal Street entrance to D block.
- Prep TA to supervise D block gate, reminding parents to not enter and escorting students to ground floor area in front of PM.
- Extra TA to supervise students in ground floor area until 8.45 a.m.
2.45 p.m.
- Preps and Year 1s move from classrooms
- All Preps will be taken in class groups to the assembly hall. Those walking home can be collected by parents.
- All Year 1 classes will be taken to the netball court and kept in class lines.
2.50 p.m.
- Preps using the pick-up zone will be taken by one of the Prep teachers and one Teacher Aide to the pick-up zone.
- Year 2-6 will assemble on the oval in class lines as per map shown. Teachers will wait at the front of their line to help parents identify the correct location.
- Pick up zone in Hawthorne Street from 2.50 - 3.00 p.m. for Prep only
3.00 p.m.
- Students who are walking/riding home alone are dismissed from the oval.
- Year 2 - 6 Pick-up zone students, are dismissed from oval.
- Year 1 Pick-up zone students will be escorted to the pick-up zone by one year 1 teacher.
Personal Devices
Our policy on phones and Smart Watches is; all phones and internet capable devices to be handed into the office when students arrive at school. This has been very successful and has ensured no student is texting, phoning or accessing data on school grounds.
As technology moves rapidly, we have to maintain this security for all our students. I have noticed some new wrist devices arriving that have various capabilities e.g. cameras and messaging.
Logistically, it is not possible for staff to monitor modes on devices and keep up to date with what each device can do during the school day. Therefore, it is important that any device capable of photography and or communication remains at home or is handed into the school office during the school day.

- Lost Property
As the weather is cooler, we are seeing a collection of school jumpers in lost property. Please ask your child to check lost property for any missing items. There are many school jumpers and other personal items in the Lost Property.
Please label all clothing clearly.
- Attendance
It is important that children are at school all day, every day.
A reminder that parents/caregivers must advise the school of your child/children’s absence for any period of time throughout the school day. This can be done by phoning or emailing the school on the day of absence (or prior to the absence if known).
School Office:
Ph: 3358 7333 choose Option 1 to leave an absence message before 9.00am
Email: absences@newfarmss.eq.edu.au
Students should be at school by 8:45am, when the first bell goes to prepare for learning that starts at 9am.
- Absences
As we are in the “cold and flu” season so any student who is unwell must not attend school and must stay home until they are completely well. If your child presents appearing unwell (and especially in the case of cold or flu-like symptoms), you will be contacted and your child will be required to be collected and taken home until they are well enough to return.
- Playground
Please ensure your child has a school hat whilst playing in the playground. If your child does not have a hat, the teacher will ask them to sit under the building, out of the sun. Our ‘No Hat, No Play’ helps children to stay protected from the sun and is a great reminder to be well prepared when they attend school.
Book Fair 2020
We are very excited to announce that Book Fair 2020 is coming in term 3 week 8 and 9!
There will be lots of books and stationery for sale and NFSS will receive a percentage of all purchases that will go towards more books for the school library!
The book fair will run a little differently this year due to the current COVID-19 situation:
- No parents to come into the book fair on the school grounds.
- Students will bring home a wish list of books and stationery they have seen at the book fair.
- Parents can make a purchase online and students will be given the book/stationery at school.
- Students can still take cash to school to spend on any item in the book fair.
More information will be given during Term 3 week 7.
Any queries please email me alamb105@eq.ed.edu.
Premiers Reading Challenge
Premiers Reading Challenge forms are due on the 28 August. It’s not too late to grab a form now and start reading!
A reminder that all students Premiers Reading Challenge forms need to come back to the library by the 28 August, so students have about 4 weeks to log all the books they have read.
If students haven’t started recording but know what books they have read, they can still collect a form from the library, fill it in with some help if needed. It’s not too late!
Students are to return their completed forms to the library, and I will register the student’s total amount of books read during the challenge.
Digital access to reading
Don’t forget students still have access to eBooks, audio books and read-along-books at the EQ Digital Library. Students only need their MIS ID and no password is required.
You can access the elibrary on your PC here or through the SORA app here.
Students can access the New Farm State School Library Catalogue to search for physical books in the library using their students MIS ID and password: newfarmss. Students and parents can see:
- Student current loans.
- New books that have recently arrived.
- Popular reads and popular series.
- Suggestions for upper and lower fiction and non-fiction interests.
- The Top Borrower of the Week and other events in the library.
Top Borrower of the Week
Our top Borrower for Term 3 week 3 is Thalina B in 2A.
Thalina is enjoying reading non-fiction books about nature including the weather and animals.
Well done and congratulations Thalina for your huge enthusiasm for reading!
Happy Reading!
Angela Lamb
