Drop Off and Pick Up
Thank you to everyone who have already registered for our LOOKOUT PROGRAM.
Congratulations to Alex’s mum Vanessa who was rewarded with the first of our ‘DoubleShot Café’ coffee vouchers for following all our LOOKOUT procedures. Vanessa always displays her lookout name tag on the front visor and Alex is always ready on time and bag in hand ready to get collected. If we can have everyone following this example, we will have a very efficient collection zone.

Look Out! program
The Look Out! program is designed to assist schools in managing the flow of traffic in pick-up and set-down areas. Parents/caregivers stay in their vehicle and move in a queue to the top of the 2 minute Loading Zone where their child will be waiting at a safe pick up point. This involves:
- volunteers managing the queue and directing children to the cars
- parents in the queue ‘looking out’ for their children to get in the car
- children at the designated pick up/set down area looking for the family car.
Please download the LOOKOUT form, complete it and email it to us. Once you receive your label please ensure you place it on your car visor so that staff can see your family name. This really helps us when calling your child/ren to the car.
We will be watching for more people doing a great job!
Evacuation Drills Term 2
All evacuation drills are completed for term 2. As these were done with individual classes we were able to give specific feedback on their process. This week we have also completed our whole school lockdown drill. Thank you to staff for ensuring students were familiar with the drill procedures in both instances.
Facilities Update
This week our Master Plan project team will begin meeting again to progress the work of our new building. Other work underway is the refurbishment of our pool dressing rooms. We anticipate these will be completed by the holidays.
P&C AGM
All parents and carers are welcome to attend our P&C Annual General Meeting Tuesday 16 June at 6pm in the hall. This is an opportunity to hear summary reports of the 2019 school year achievements and to be part of the election for the P&C Executive. There are limited numbers able to attend so please contact the secretary@nfsspandc.com.au
Life Education
This week students in all year levels are involved in the Life Education program. Each year level module is different and as such no two Life Education visits are the same. The program will be delivered as an incursion in classrooms and an outline of each module is as follows:
Prep – Harold’s Friendship (60 -75mins)
After building a model spaceship at school, Harold and his friends, Boots and Red venture into an imaginary world in outer space. As the adventure unfolds children explore: how to build friendships and care for others, feelings and emotions, how nutrition and physical activity affects how we think and feel, safe and unsafe situations and early warning signs and safe places and people to turn to for help.
Y1 – Ready, Steady, Go (60 – 75mins)
Harold and his friends are ready for their big race at the school athletics carnival. Or are they? When one member of their relay team identifying how our body reacts in new situations doesn’t show up, what will they do? The program focuses on the benefits of physical activity, safety strategies in different environments, as well as what our body needs to be healthy including nutrition, water, and sleep.
Y2 – Growing Good Friends (60 – 75mins)
Harold battles to find out what to give to his Grandma for her birthday, until his friends, Boots and Red step in and offer some good ideas. This animated story takes us to familiar surroundings where students can: explore what health messages mean, identify safety signs, recognize how physical activity and nutrition contribute to a healthy lifestyle and explore how positive relationships benefit our health and wellbeing.
Y3 – All Systems Go (90mins)
Inside a futuristic machine ‘The Venture’, the Captain and his crew take the class on a tour of the human body. Travelling through the blood we explore the functions of various body parts and how magnificent the human body really is .The students discuss issues and engage in activities centred on peer pressure, second hand smoking, safety with medicines, factors that influence the function of body systems.
Y4 – bCyberwise (90mins)
The Children explore ’netiquette; (Internet etiquette) and Cybersafety issues through role-play and interactive activities. They explore how to establish positive respectful relationships and to report negative experiences to a responsible adult that they trust.
Y5 – Think Twice (90 mins)
Students identify social, personal situations and consequences that may place young people at risk from alcohol. This includes physical development, social interaction, as well as social pressures and influences. Students will discuss, compare and develop strategies to avoid the harmful consequences of alcohol misuse.
Y6 – Relate, Respect Connect
A key part of Life Education’s preventative health education program, Relate Respect Connect is a unique, contemporary learning experience that explores building positive, safe and respectful relationships.
Health and safety measures
Life Education staff will adhere to strict hygiene measures during this incursion. This will include:
- Handwashing and hand sanitising, particularly before and after each session;
- Regular cleaning of any materials used.
Physical distancing measures remains an important consideration for our school during this visit to help reduce any transmission of COVID-19. Although this is not required for students during classroom activities, Life Education staff will continue to maintain appropriate social distancing measures during their visit.
As an alternative space for learning, all lessons will be conducted in classrooms, rather than inside the van, in order to minimise gathering the children in a confined teaching and learning space. This aims to:
- reduce the use of common areas and mixing of classes and;
- enhance ventilation.
If parents require further information please visit www.lifeeducation.org.au/parents/ to access resources to use at home and an email invitation is extended to contact Michele Tabrett mtabrett@lifeeducation.org.au from Life Education, should they wish to discuss the program any further.

- School Uniform
Thanks to all those parents who have ordered school jumpers in the last few weeks. As a uniform school, it is an expectation that any jumper worn over winter, is a New Farm State School jumper. I have seen some lovely hand knitted cardigans and jumpers and colourful sweatshirts. In line with our uniform policy, which is part of our enrolment agreement, we request that these items are not worn at school.
- School Photographs
It’s wonderful that we have managed to secure a booking for school photographs for June the 22nd. Individual photographs will be taken and put together for a class photo. If you have paid money in term one and did not request a refund, the money will be automatically carried over.
If you are not sure if an order was placed, you can do a search for Photo Orders in your email and an Order Summary should be found. Please contact Geoff, directly, from Little Images at geoff@littleimages.com.au if you have any questions.

Call out for Overdue Books
We would like to reduce the number of overdue books in the library as we currently have about 180 student overdue books. If parents can have a look at home for any overdue library books, students can bring them to school and return them to the library, ready for others to borrow. This is important so students can borrow books in week 10 to read over the school holidays.
If you cannot find your child’s book, the book will be marked as lost and an invoice will be sent to parents and guardians. The small amount will go towards future purchasing of books for the school library.
eBooks for the holidays
As well as New Farm State Schools physical books, don’t forget the EQ Digital Library for student’s term time and holiday reading!
The EQ Digital Library contains 28000 eBooks, audio books and streaming videos to support student learning and reading for enjoyment. You can also go through Sora to get to the digital library.
To login, students only need their MIS ID.
Premiers Reading Challenge
New Farm State School students are encouraged to join in the 2020 Premier’s Reading Challenge.
What is it?
The Premier’s Reading Challenge is an annual state wide initiative for Queensland State Schools and non-state schools from Prep to Year 9. Last year, 168,000 students from 937 schools took part in the challenge, reading an astounding 2.31 million books.
Student’s make a record of the number of books they read over the set time period, then receive a certificate of completion if they read the set amount of books.
Reading plays an important part in students’ lives during their school years and beyond. It allows children to actively engage their imagination and opens up a world of educational opportunities. The Premier’s Reading Challenge aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read for pleasure and learning.
When is it on?
The reading period for the 2020 Premier's Reading Challenge commenced on Monday 11 May and closes Friday 28 August.
How many Books do students read?
- Prep to Year 2 should read or experience at least 20 books,
- Years 3 and 4 should read at least 20 books, and
- Years 5 to 6 should read at least 15 books.
Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories, or reading picture books. The aim for the 2020 challenge is to engage more students reading more books than ever before.
How do students get involved?
Students wishing to take part in this year’s challenge will be registered by Mrs Angela Lamb our school’s Premier’s Reading Challenge coordinator. Student record forms can be picked up from the school library or download the student record form.
Every student who completes the challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier! Students who participate but don’t complete the challenge receive a Certificate of Participation. Certificates will be presented to students during the Premier’s Reading Challenge celebration weeks of 2 – 13 November 2020.
It will be great to see as many of our students as possible take part in the 2020 Premier’s Reading Challenge!
Please visit Premier's Reading Challenge for more information.
