Dr Carmel McGrath
It has been a very pleasing start to our school year with student enrolments settling very quickly and classes getting on with their core work. Thank you to all parents for organising your child’s book resources. If you have not yet finalised all the resources please prioritise the text books as a matter of urgency so that students are able to focus on their learning from the outset.
Curriculum Focus
Over the next fortnight, parents should be receiving the class newsletter for term 1 highlighting the curriculum focus, special events and days as well as class rules and teacher contact details. Further information will be presented at our annual parent teacher information session in week 3.
Enrolment Census – Day 4 & Day 8
Education Queensland has extended our annual Day 8 census to Day 13 but numbers are settling now.
Our 2019 Day 8 enrolment total was 504 students.
Today our enrolments were 555 students so I predict our numbers and classes will remain stable at this stage, unless we have a very large intake next week.
Swimming
In terms 1 & 4 our Physical Education lessons focus on swimming, with the exception on Prep who swim only in term 4. Swimming lessons will begin next week. Thank you to parents for completing the permission and financial aspects of the lessons.
Assembly
This week we held our first assembly and our 2020 Year 6 captains began their duties, confidently and well organised. Thank you to Ms Loudon for helping the captains prepare for their roles. Parents and carers are always welcome to attend our weekly assemblies in our hall Tuesday mornings at 9:15am.
Next week in addition to our regular morning assembly, we are also holding a special 2:30pm afternoon assembly for the Chinese New Year and the annual Lion Dance performance. Thank you to Mrs Chen for arranging it.
Staffing Update - Leadership Team
Congratulations to Kay Bradley for her successful appointment as permanent Deputy Principal at New Farm. Currently we are also advertising for the recruitment of a Head Of Department (Curriculum) for 2020. The focus of the new HOD role will be implementation of the Australian Curriculum particularly the Arts this year, as well as leading the review of our pedagogical framework, and embedding systems for moderating student work.
Kay Bradley
Next week, parents are invited into classrooms for sessions so that we can share important information about the school and your child’s classroom.
Please see the table below for the days and times for your meeting. If you are unable to attend, teachers can provide some written information for you.

Welcome back to New Farm State School and a warm welcome to all our new families.
At NFSS we aim to create a love of reading and books. Our Library is home to a range of children’s literature, information texts and teacher resources.
Mrs Lamb and Mrs Chambers run the library. Please come and visit us and take a look. Below you will find some useful information about the NFSS Library and services that we provide.

Borrowing Information
- Every class will have a weekly library time when they borrow and return books.

- Library books become overdue when they have not been returned within 2 weeks.
- Overdue lists are issued fortnightly to class teachers.
- Once a student’s name appears on an overdue list for 3 consecutive weeks (for the same resource), an email is issued to parents/carers advising them of the overdue resource.
- Library resources, which are lost or damaged, will need to be paid for or replaced.
Book Clubs
At NFSS, we run 2 book clubs – Scholastic Bookclub and Red Gum Bookclub.
Scholastic

- Brochures will be handed out twice per term and orders arrive approximately 1 week after the ordering has closed.
- Orders can ONLY be made online at scholastic.com.au/LOOP

Fun in the library for 2020!
We will be planning lots of interesting activities throughout the year and are looking forward to sharing engaging new resources with the students of New Farm. This year we will host Book Fair and enjoy dressing up as our favourite book characters during Book Week.
Watch this space to find out more about what’s happening in your school’s library!
We look forward to seeing you all in the NFSS Library soon.

Hi all,
Lessons for years 4, 5 & 6 during the school morning each Thursday will begin in week 3 the 13th of February.
Band for years 5 & 6 (concert band) before school on Thursdays with Mr McIntyre will begin this term when I advise (once we've blown out a few cobwebs)!
Band for year 4 (junior band) before school on Thursdays with Mr Quigley will begin in term 2 when I advise (once we can play a few notes)!
Looking forward, Colin.
Lion Dance coming to New Farm on Tuesday 11 February, 2:30 pm
To welcome the Year of the Rat, we are inviting Southern Shaolin International Wushu Academy to perform the Lion Dance and Martial art presentations. It has become one of the highlights of the New Farm Celebrations.
The Rat is the first of all zodiac animals. Rats are clever, quick thinkers; successful, but content with living a quiet and peaceful life. Optimistic and energetic, people born in the Rat year are likable by all. They are sensitive to other’s emotions but are stubborn with your opinion. Their personality is kind, but due to weak communication skills, their words may seem impolite and rude. On the financial side, they like saving and can be stingy. However, their love for hoarding will sometimes cause them to waste money on unnecessary things.
Recent years of the Rat are: 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020.
