2024 Prep Enrolments
On Monday 23rd we held our Prep Open Day. It was lovely to meet more of our new families and allow our new 2024 preppies to visit our school, have a fun play morning in the prep area and meet some new friends and the Prep staff. Parents joined us in the hall for an information forum and then an informal morning tea. Thank you to staff who helped out, Little Ducks staff for attending, and also Natalie Chin who set up the second-hand uniform shop, Fiona Caniglia and Rachel Frizzo from our P&C Executive who helped answer parent questions and Stan from Schools Plus who was on hand to answer questions and answers about after school care.
Staff Update
Next week I will be away on long service leave. Mrs Bradley will be Acting Principal and Ms Norman will be Acting Deputy Principal.
After School Use of School Grounds
Students are welcome to play from 3-3:20pm under parental supervision. Thank you for ensuring that you play in the ‘Little Play’ prep area only from 3-3:20pm as this allows Schools Plus to ensure their supervision is effectively focussed on the students in their care. At the 3:20pm bell, all persons not booked into Schools Plus should vacate the school premises.
Please note that School Plus staff and students only should be in the prep play ground outside the Music and Prep B classroom as this is licenced to Schools Plus from 3-6pm. Thank you.
2024 Student Leaders’ Selection Process
This week we finalise our leadership selection process for Project Captains. The students have been outstanding throughout and all should be so proud of their presentations. Congratulations to all students who participate including those who will take on the role of captains.
Friday 27th October is a busy day with 3 important events:
- World Teacher’s Day – a wonderful time to acknowledge our dedicated teaching team and thank them for their commitment to our students and community.
- Halloween Disco – Thank you to our P&C for organising our annual school disco. Join us for a fun night in the hall from 5:30-8:30pm. Halloween costumes for children only. Adults must accompany and supervise their children for the duration of the event. This is a primary school event only and students must remain in the designated area around the hall.
- Day for Daniel – WEAR RED – key message is about keeping our kids safe! Students will revisit the Morcombe Foundation Curriculum Materials which teach children to Recognise, React and Report if they feel it’s not right or not safe in any situation.
Daily Writing
Are you creative? Would you like to get our students excited about Daily Writing? With Daily Writing as one of our Signature Practices we like to inspire our students. I am looking for an interested parent or a group of parents who could transform the window of the office in reception into a writing stimuli, for week 6 of this term.
Please contact me if you would like to get involved.
Filming in School
Please remember that parents and visitors are not able to film New Farm State School students without parent permission. This rule relates to all areas of school and includes the Halloween Disco and Fete.

Hands-on Maths in Prep
Why is hands-on maths important?
Teaching through hands-on activities in maths focuses students' attention on ideas and sense making and developing mathematical practices. Teaching through hands-on maths also develops a student's confidence and builds on their strengths.
Prep K have been exploring their mathematical skills through hands-on activities in the classroom during maths groups. Way to go!
QParents
We kindly ask that all NFSS families register with QParents.
QParents is a parent portal that we are progressing towards making our one-stop-shop platform for parents. Recent upgrades to the functionality of QParents, means that it will become a portal for permissions for school excursions.
QParents is available via either a website or a handy app, which enables fast access to pay multiple invoices at once and provide multiple permissions at once.

Go green for EcoMarines
New Farm went green this year in support of EcoMarines. Brisbane City Council lit up the Story Bridge in green to kick off the week. We started the day on Friday with Containers for Change. We were overjoyed to be able to give out some bags to parents to start collecting for us. Please meet this coming Friday at 8:30 a.m. at the Annie Street gate if you would like to participate.
During the first break on Friday, the EcoMarines carried out our inaugural annual bird audit, yielding some intriguing findings. We couldn't believe how many pigeons there were!
The EcoMarines will be concentrating on the following topics for the rest of 2023:
- brainstorming ideas to solve our pigeon problem;
- introduce wrap free Tuesday;
- Containers for Change.

From the garden
The last of our inclusive gardening tables has arrived! The four multi-level tables make it possible to garden while standing or sitting. The latest was planted out by School Plus students, who put in lettuce for the tuckshop and some marigold flowers too. Thank you to our excellent craftsman, Chad Albinger, who you can see working on them in the photos. As one community member exclaimed, “They are objects of art!” We tend to agree. The tables were funded by the P&C and the Brisbane City Council’s Cultivating Community Gardens Grant. They are a fabulous addition to Little Patch. In other news, blackboard take overs are happening regularly this week… join in during the Gardenlife before-school program or have a look at the poems and pictures when you’re walking by.
School Plus students and parent volunteer Carolina Puleston recently helped the P&C’s Habitat Group scope out and start the school’s new Digging Place! The kids helped us pilot the tools, the rules, and how to have a fun time in this hands-on play space next to the oval. Their feedback was much appreciated. More updates on the way as this good idea keeps growing.

The P&C meetings are a platform where parents and family members can actively contribute to the decision-making processes and support the school in creating a nurturing environment for our students. Welcoming the participation of First Nations families in our P&C meetings, as well as collaborating and engaging with First Nation community members and organisations signifies a crucial and foundational step in our journey towards reconciliation.
