Chinese New Year – Lion Dance
Thank you to Mrs Chen for once again organising our annual Lion Dance Performance. Prep – Year 6 students and staff enjoyed the performance last Tuesday afternoon.

Year 6 Outdoor Education Camp
2023 Year 6 camp is on Moreton Island which aligns well with our Eco Marines Project work. The camp is facilitated by the experienced Oceania Tours staff leading the activities. Year 6 staff information session held this week was well attended by parents but the presentations will be sent out on class dojo for those who were unable to attend. The staff supervising this year’s camp will be Ms Zayn Al Abidin, Mrs Blackadder, Mr Jones and Mr Lawrence. Permissions and payment details are coming soon and any questions should be directed to your Year 6 staff.
Staffing Update
This week we have finalised our class changes with the addition of another teacher in the Year 1 and 2 classes. Thank you to all staff who helped support a smooth transition for the students. It is very good to see the classes settling quickly into their new classes and being able to benefit from smaller class sizes. I welcome the appointment of Mr Ben Shih in Year 5 and Mr Vatsal Thaker in Year 2.
Mr Lawrence and Mr Hewitt are teaching Year 5 B during Mrs Baker’s leave this term. Mrs Loudon continues as Acting Deputy Principal during Mrs Bradley’s leave.
Look Out Program
Thank you to all parents who have registered for our Look Out Program – registering means you understand the rules of our Pick Up / Drop Off zone and get a name tag for display on your car visor. Most drivers are doing a great job and we really appreciate the cooperation shown. Some concerns I still have are:
- Drivers should not park and leave their vehicle when using the Annie Street zone
- Many cars do not have student name tags clearly displayed
- Parents with children are walking in between cars to cross the road rather than using the crossing which is available. This is a major safety concern and distracting for staff who are helping students in and out of cars.
See attached the Look Out Registration form – once you send that in to the office your child will get a new label for your car. Thank you for helping us get this working well.

Professional Learning Teams
Each week our year level teaching teams meet to ensure there are aligned with curriculum delivery, assessment and moderation of student work. These meetings are supported by HOD Ms Loudon and other Coaches where applicable. The teachers are working collaboratively to ensure consistency and quality of practice across the year levels, including.
- Playing a vital role in improving continuity and consistency of teaching practice within their year level for improving the educational outcomes of students.
- Being advocates for the “New Farm Way” as outlined in school policy documents such as the New Farm Strategic Plan 2020-23, current Annual Improvement Plan, Pedagogical Approach and Whole School Curriculum Plan (3 levels).
- Contributing to improve communication across year levels and with the school leadership team.
- Overseeing and ensure the timely completion of year level responsibilities.
The staff will participate in leadership professional development by consultant David Curran and be supported with additional time to work with colleagues in mentoring and coaching roles.
Class Changes
As our school grows in reputation and enrolments we are increasing in staff, resulting in changes for classes. These changes have meant we have been able to create smaller class sizes in some year levels for our students which will benefit their learning for the remainder of 2023. A YouTube clip that families have found to be helpful is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeu9X88g8DE

- Tuesday 21st February 8:15am- Prep, and Year 1
- Thursday 23th February 8:15am- Year 3
- Thursday 23th February 3:00pm- Year 4

Be Safe When Getting Your Friend’s Attention
One of our Kookie Rules- Be Safe, has been discussed with students lately who are learning the best ways to get the attention of others. Please support our school by acknowledging when your child has been safe. Try and be as specific as possible e.g. ‘You were being safe when you use your words to tell your friend to stop’. The more we explicitly teach our children what being safe is, and what it isn’t, the more we acknowledge them for being safe, and the more we use consistent correction about being unsafe- the more they will learn this important life rule.
Year 1 Being Learners
It was fantastic to see 1S being learners last week with their Math.

Thanks to Julie, Louise and the rest of the volunteers who have worked so hard to grow our beautiful gardens here at NFSS. This term students from various year levels will be using Little Patch and Little Farm to explore how science and technology help us grow our food. In particular, the Year 6 students will be collecting data about the current and potential garden beds using micro:bits to learn how conditions like light availability, temperature and soil moisture effect the growth and survival of the plants.
On Friday Feb 3 it was the GIRLS CRICKET DISTRICT TRIALS and 5 girls from NFSS trialled - pictured L to R - Amira M, Mia H, Margot W, Jessica L and Abby L.
Huge congratulations as all five girls successfully made it to the next round to represent NFSS at the Met North Regional Girls Cricket trials which will be held on Monday Feb 20 at Everton Cricket Club. Let's wish the girls luck!
District Cricket selection
Year 6, Henry was selected for the City District Cricket Boys team – a tremendous effort to trial so well.

District Swimming Selection
Congratulations to Lola and Harrison for swimming their way into the district team. They will compete at the Met North Regional Championships on Monday 27 February. Lola will swim the 100m backstroke and Harrison takes on the 50m backstroke.
Thanks to Mr Lawrence and Mrs Middleton for helping out on the day.
We would like to introduce our new PARENT SNACK BAR, which is located beside our sign-in area… We understand just how busy your lives as parents can be and you can forget to feed yourselves when you are on the run in the mornings and the afternoons. We would like to make your lives just that little bit easier by having a selection of snacks available for you as you are rushing out the door. You will find sachets of coffee and hot chocolate, up and go’s, fruit, oat bars, juice poppers, popcorn, and a few other little treats!
We do ask though, that you please remind your children that this food is not for them, and for the parents only, so please ensure they are not taking food off the trolley as they leave in the afternoons. This is the expectation that we have set with the children in service, and we would be extremely appreciative if you could all help us uphold this.
It’s an exciting new year for New Farm and School Plus. There are many new families attending the service so for this reason a few reminders.
- Any requests for permanent bookings must be made through QK enrol.
- Please ensure you have your child/ren booked in for a session as we can no longer book them in past the start of our session times, 6:30am and 2:00pm.
- Please ensure your child/ren are marked absent if they are not attending your booked session, this is for child safety reasons. Child/ren not accounted for by 3:30 are reported to police via a missing children report.
- Please ensure upon pickup and drop off you sign your child/ren in or out, again this is for child safety reasons.
- Please ensure an additional activities form is filled out if you have booked activities during outside school hours care, we cannot let your child/ren attend without one.
As always however please call, text, or email us on 0458 052 153 / newfarm@schoolplus.com.au if you have any questions.
