Eco-Marine Leaders
Thank you to Ms McLeod for supervising our EcoMarine captains Alexis, Denzel, Kareena and Sophia on their excursion to Moreton Island yesterday. The group joined other students and staff in a training day which focused on hands on activities and lessons about the importance of community conservation efforts. We look forward to hearing more about their ideas and pursuits throughout the year.

LIFE EDUCATION
The Life Education Team will be visiting our school again between 8th-16th June. Attached to the newsletter is the ‘Life Education Primary Module Overview 2022’. Further information can also be found at Life Education Hub | Life Education QLD. The Life Education Modules will be delivered in the hall as unfortunately the Life Education Van can’t be on site this year. All the modules the students will be learning about are connected to their year level Health Curriculum. Please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher, or our Head of Department Curriculum, Judy Loudon if you have further queries about this program. Overview-
QLD ASSOCATION OF MATHS TEACHERS CONFERENCE
Proudly our school is hosting this state-wide event on Sunday 22nd May. Our staff are provided with complementary registration. This will also complement our registration for the Infinite Ideas Online Numeracy Festival, 16th May - 9th June.
The Primary School Nurse Health Readiness Program will be screening at New Farm State School commencing on Monday, 30 May 2022. This is a Queensland Government service that offers Free Vision Screening to all children enrolled in Prep. If your child is in Prep and you would like their vision screened, you will need to complete a consent form. Only one parent/guardian needs to fill in the consent form per child. The consent form link will close on Sunday, 22 May 2022.
Please click on the following link to access the Online Consent Form and Parent Information Letter: https://visionscreening.health.qld.gov.au/ParentalConsent/0712HrM1.
HOME READING REMINDER
Just a reminder that the students in Prep, Yr 1 and Yr 2 need to bring their home reading books/activities back to school on a Thursday for them to receive new books to take home on a Friday. Please ensure the books are returned each week on the correct day so we have enough variety of books for all of our young readers.

Innovation - 2022 Premier's Coding Challenge
This term, some of our students have begun designing their projects for the Premier's Coding Challenge #digitalfuturesqld (education.qld.gov.au). Primary aged students from Year 3 and up are challenged to create an interactive game or app that represents the future.
Students will focus on a topic (e.g. transportation in the future) and a user group to design their digital solutions around. While students will have a short amount of time each week during morning tea with the Innovation Coach to work on their projects, we encourage students to continue their work at home between meetings. We also encourage parents/caregivers to get involved.
Apps can be designed and coded using App Lab | Code.org. This is a Java based platform and will require more advanced coding skills.
Games can be coded using Microsoft MakeCode Arcade, Sprite Lab | Code.org or Scratch - Imagine, Program, Share (mit.edu). Each platform uses visual/block-base coding, which is often more intuitive for young coders. The Year 3 and Year 5 students are learning to use Code.org and MakeCode Arcade, respectively, for their Digital Technology unit this year.
Premiers Reading Challenge
It’s that time of year again when the Premiers Reading Challenge begins!
The Premiers Reading Challenge is a state-wide initiative for students from Prep to Year 9. The challenge is not a competition but aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read widely for pleasure and learning. Students can read any book from home, the school or public library.
For a student to complete the challenge, they must read or experience a book with a parent, the allocated number of books for their year level, during the reading period.
