- Supervision before 8.45am.
A reminder that there is no supervision at school until 8.30 a.m. We currently have a number of students arriving very early to school and who are not booked in to Jabiru. Children in this situation can become bored and engage in risky behaviour.
- Second Step: Skills for Social and Academic Success
At New Farm, we want your child to be as successful as possible at school. Success in school is not just about reading and maths. It is also about knowing how to learn and how to get along with others. This year we will be introducing the Second Step program, in every classroom, to teach these critical skills. This program was researched and selected by our 2021 Well Being committee, as part of our quadrennial school improvement agenda. The Second Step program will work with our existing Positive Behaviour for Learning Framework.
The Second Step program teaches skills in the following areas:
- Skills for Learning – skills to help you learn.
- Empathy –identifying and understanding your own and others’ feelings.
- Emotion Management – learning specific skills for calming down when experiencing strong feelings.
- Problem Solving – learning processes for solving problems with others in a positive way.
Throughout the year, your child will be learning a lot and your class teacher will be sharing Home Links with you along the way. These Home Links are simple, fun activities for you and your child to complete together. It’s a great way for you to understand what your child is learning and for your child to show you what he or she knows.

RWI SPELLING
Last year we introduced Read Write Inc (RWI) Spelling to students in Yr 2 to Yr 6 and are continuing with this program this year. RWI Spelling is a robust, fast – paced, systematic spelling programme that builds on the phonics knowledge learnt in RWI Phonics and teaches spelling rules. RWI Spelling provides us with a consistent approach to teaching spelling across our school.
The RWI Spelling program comprises of
- Practice books – books that are kept at school for students to work in. They contain partner, group and independent activities to consolidate understanding and practise and monitor student’s spelling.
- Log Books – books that students write challenging words in to learn at home for homework. Yr 3 and Yr 4 students use the same log book for 2 years and the Yr 5 and Yr 6 students use the same log book for 2 years.
- Online resources – used for whole class teaching and include short videos to teach new spelling rules.
These resources come from England and cannot be purchased individually here in Australia. Please ensure your child/ren look after their Log Books very carefully as the only way we can replace them is to purchase more Log Books from England. If this happens the school will invoice you for the replacement cost.
Please look out for your child’s Log Book coming home soon.
