IMPORTANT NOTICES
What if my child is unwell?
Any child who is showing signs of illness or feeling unwell, must stay at home.
If a child is showing signs of illness at school, the school will contact the parent or carer to collect the child.

Learning Walks
As part of our focus on writing improvement, Deputy Principal Kay Bradly and I will be visiting all classes over the next few weeks to talk to students about their writing lessons. Kay will be visiting the Prep – 2 classes and I will be visiting the 3-6 classes. These visits allow us to gauge consistency in practices across year levels and across the school. Feedback on classroom observations are another important element of our professional learning.
Incursion
It is great to see our Year 2 It’s a Small World Incursion will go ahead today. It's a Small World is a two-hour incursion that builds on previous learning and investigates our links with places near and far. Students share their personal stories and see how different places have meaning for different people. Incrusion leaders share their global links and together we discuss how distance and accessibility influence how often we visit our special places.
Workplace Health and Safety
- We have recently held our term Lockdown drill and staff are currently reviewing our evacuation drill procedures with students. This evacuation drill will be held within the next week.
- Masks are mandatory – unfortunately we still have some parents coming onto our site without masks and staff are reminding them that this is essential. I ask that parents and visitors cooperate with staff directions and be respectful at all times.
- We have also purchased face shields as some teachers are finding these better for enabling students to see their faces especially when expressions or mouth formation is required to support student learning.
- Cleaning and ancillary staff continue to follow the covid cleaning routines daily.
Next Week – Book Week “Old Worlds New Worlds Other Worlds”
I am sure students and staff are excited about Book Week and the Tuesday 24th August - Dress Up Day . Watch out for Mrs Lamb’s Library information for more details about the author visit, activities in the library and of course this year’s theme for Dress Up Day.
Staff Update
This week we welcome Mrs Jenny Deans to the role of Acting Business Manager. Jenny is a very experienced BM who has taken a contract with us for the next few months while Mrs Anderson is on leave. Jenny comes highly recommended and very keen to be working at New Farm. I will be on family leave next week with Kay Bradley in the Acting Principal role.

Birthday Food
Unfortunately, with COVID considerations and an increasing prevalence of food allergies and dietary requirements, birthday food has become more challenging for staff to manage. As our staff is continually growing and changing with many relief and specialist teachers coming and going from the school.
Just a reminder that from the beginning of term 3, no shared foods should be brought into school and would encourage any birthday treats to be arranged by parents out of school hours. If parents wish to share food for such special occasions, such as a social gathering at the local park straight after school, they should liaise with other parents and take the responsibility for ensuring allergies and dietary requirements are catered for. Where class events are arranged, the class teacher will take responsibility for the organisation.

Faces of New Farm Art Show
The ‘Faces of New Farm Art Show’ is back. This time our year 5 and 6 students are presenting their artwork in the last week of term 3 (Monday 13th September – Thursday 16th September 8:15–8:45am, 3:00–3:15pm and Friday 8:15-8:45am only) in the hall. We welcome an optional gold coin donation upon entry to help support the purchase of our new art display boards.
Ms Davis has been exploring visual conventions such as line, shade, colour, proportion and texture and creating self-portraits using a diverse range of mediums. The historical context of portraiture is being explored, along with how portraits not only capture the image of a person, but also convey feelings and emotions, identity, culture and a sense of community.
Over the next couple of weeks students will begin using our 3D printers (thanks to the P&C for their support last year in the purchase of 5 brand new 3D printers!) to create three-dimensional objects through a layering method. This involves layering plastic materials to create a name tag as a keepsake. Keep up the great work everyone and we hope to see you at the Faces of New Farm Art Show to check out their fabulous display!
Early Years Network Community Connections - update
The Early Years Community Connections workshop has been postponed to Thursday 2nd September, 6:30-7:30pm at Community Place, Newstead.Free tickets are still available, but be quick as places are very limited. Covid safe measures in place at this event. Register via the QR code on the flyer. Flyers are also displayed at the school office. Hope to see you there!
Bump up Walls
This term our teachers have been busy getting creative with ‘Bump Up Walls’ to support student writing. Bump Up Walls provide a visual display designed to help our NFSS students know how to improve, or 'bump up' their writing to the next level of achievement. These displays include levelled exemplars or examples of work aimed at empowering students to take charge of their own learning, as their writing goes from ‘good’ writing, to ‘super’ writing!
1H have used a Pokemon theme to ‘bump up’ their writing on their wall. Matilda and Patrick were really excited to show me how their pokemon’s evolve as their achievement levels move up. Go 1H!

1D are aiming for the stars for their Bump Up Wall. Well done to the entire year 1 teacher team as they help to inspire our students to be the best writers they can be! Keep up the great work.
How do I support my child’s writing at home?
Here’s 5 Top Writing Tips:
- Provide a comfortable place for your child to write.
This should be a quiet space that is well lit with ample supplies of paper, pens and pencils. You can also decorate with family photos and inspiring pictures to be used as story starters.
- Read, read, read!
Reading to your child and/or your child reading to themselves is the single most productive activity to improve your child’s writing. Reading promotes general and content-specific vocabulary and also exposes your child to a variety of authors’ techniques to engage the reader.
- Encourage your child to keep a reflective journal
Journaling about what is happening at school, home or on a special trip. This is a wonderful outlet for independent expression of feelings that develops the “senses” in your child’s writing. Provide intentional experiences in the community e.g. a trip to the museum, a walk by the Brisbane river that can provoke their interest in the world around them.
- Provide real-life opportunities for your child
Writing a thank you note, a shopping list or party invitation is a great way to increase your child’s interest in writing. A good old fashioned pen pal can nurture friendships too and who doesn’t enjoy receiving a letter in the mailbox with your name on it?
- Role model writing for your child
Ensure your child sees you as a writer. Spend time discussing authentic writing you see around you such as letters in newspapers, written advertisements and billboards as you drive past. Encourage your child to think critically and discuss the purpose of the writing and the audience it is trying to reach.

The Early Years Network presentation ‘The Inclusive Mindset’ has been postponed to 2nd September. I look forward to presenting at this event.
Our school has approximately 11% of it’s students identified as requiring extension adjustments due to gifts and talents. This is a small identified group of students. Students are identified via a compilation of data-
- Academic records
- Diagnostic maths, reading, spelling assessments and NAPLAN
- Formative and summative assessments
- External reports
- SAGES Screener for Gifts and Talents for all year 1 and 4 students
- ICAS assessment results
- Sayler Parent and Teacher Checklists
- Observational data
- Cognitive assessments
There is a difference between students being ‘bright’ and students being ‘gifted/talented’. Some of these differences include (by Janice Szabos) -
- Bright students know answers but gifted students ask questions
- Bright students work hard but gifted students still succeed despite being off task
- Bright students learn with ease but gifted students already know
- Bright students grasp meanings but gifted students draw inferences
- Bright students absorb information but gifted students manipulate information
Students can be ‘twice exceptional’. They can have a gift/talent but then also have disabilities like Dyslexia. Students are tracked via the class data, and referred to the Student Services Support Team which meets weekly.
Our Gifted Education Mentor Group meets monthly. Myself, Annabel deBoer, Natasha Andrews, Natalie Foss and Angela Lamb are progressing through the GEM training. We are also involved in the City Cluster GEM Network. In Term 4 our school will be hosting the GEM Network. Other than quality differentiated teaching that our teachers provide, there are various additional programs that students access including-
- Our school’s Sporting Achievers Program, Innovators of Tomorrow Program, Art Club, Dance Club.
- High Achievers (years 5-6)
- BRAINways (years 2-6)
- City Cluster Mini Festival (years 3-4)
- QVSA STEM Scholars Program (years 3-6)
Our school has many bright students who we support and celebrate in different ways. Our diversity is our strength. Should you have any further questions please email our Inclusion Coach Judy Loudon jloud6@eq.edu.au

Together we can build a garden legacy for our school.
We can now announce work in our Beeston Street community garden is underway, and we've launched our donation and community garden pages! Sun and Soil are on-site, with stage one works to include the selection of over 100 trees, shrubs and grasses. We will need your help! Our Beeston Street Community Garden page brings to life this beautiful space, letting you see how the area will progress over time. Our Beeston Street Community Garden Donation page will give you the chance to contribute to this new garden. The donation page is designed 'to shop' – we have a great selection of native plants for you to choose from – simply select your favourite and pay. Your funds will go directly to the purchase of these plants. If you're bamboozled by choice, we're also open to donated amounts, whatever the size.
Dear parents and carers of students in years 3 to 6,
As you may have been told, this term up to week 8 we have started giving raffle tickets for every wrapper free lunch your children bring in. This is going to be based off how many tickets each student collects in each year level and the prize for the winning year level will get to see a science show 'beneath the streets'.
This will be held on Wednesday Week 8, 9:30 after assembly in the hall for the winning year level from collecting the most raffle tickets.
Beneath the streets is an amazing science show run by the company Urban Utilities and teaches kids about what happens beneath the streets in the water ways.
Urban Utilities has teamed up with Tangalooma EcoMarines to challenge school students to remember that water is a precious resource and that every choice we make, what we pour down the sink, what we flush down the toilet or what goes down the stormwater drains and makes an impact on our local waterways.
Through the Tangalooma EcoMarines program they offer students environmental leadership opportunities including whole school challenges, attendance at high school water and waste conferences, early childhood toilet training materials and more. They work together with the EcoMarines to promote the value of water and explore ways to take action to combat water pollution and to make a difference in our beautiful Moreton Bay, Brisbane River and surrounding waterways.
Tangalooma EcoMarines offers inspirational environmental education programs including the science show beneath the streets. They focus on achieving better environmental outcomes and developing environmental leadership among students of all ages, schools, community organisations and businesses.
Book Week is in week 7!
This year the theme is ‘Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds’.
The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) will be announcing the winners of the CBCA Book of the Year 2021. The library now has the shortlisted books on display in the following categories: Picture Book of the Year; Older Readers and Eve Pownell Award for Information Books.
Book Dress up Parade
Our annual colourful and lively Book Parade will be during the assembly in book week on Tuesday 24th August. All students are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character or be inspired by the exciting theme this year ‘Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds’.
Author Visit
On Thursday 26th August we have author Dr Cameron Stelzer conducting an interactive presentation with students from all year levels. Cameron is the award-winning author of the ‘Pie Rats’, ‘Scallywags’ and ‘The Stroogle’ series. Visit his website here for further information.
The Pie Rats series are currently available on SORA if students are interested in reading now!
To access SORA, students only need their MIS login.
Library Activities
We have guest readers reading to students in the library and a staff photo competition where students will guess who their teachers and teacher aides are from the very young photos provided!
Second Hand Book Drive
The second-hand book drive will be postponed until Term 4 considering the uncertainty around COVID restrictions and access for parents on school grounds.
Please hold on to your ‘lightly used’ children’s books for now and we will notify you when you are able to bring them in for donation. Thank You!
All money raised will go toward the library to purchase new current, quality books and equipment for the library.
Premiers Reading Challenge 2021
The Premiers Reading Challenge finishes on the 27th August!
You can get your forms here. individual reader record form.
Students can read any book from home or the library and Premiers Reading Challenge has curated a book list divided into year level groups to widen your reading choices. https://readingchallenge.education.qld.gov.au/about/booklists

Every student who completes the challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier! For more information go to the Premier’s Reading Challenge website.
QSuper supports the Premier’s Reading Challenge and has provided a fantastic opportunity for two schools to win a full day visit from author, Sue Whiting, to be held in term 4. Sue’s book ‘The book of chance’ is shortlisted in the CBCA book of the year for younger readers!
There are also eight $500 book voucher prizes to be won!
What to do: Go to the website and students need to list their top five favourite books and say why they like them.
Please go to the website and use parents email addresses for the submission. https://qsuper.qld.gov.au/campaign/premiers-reading-challenge
